No. 1 UCLA Thrashes No. 12 UC San Diego, 17-2

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The No. 1 UCLA men's water polo team improved to 15-0 on the season with a 17-2 win at No. 12 UC San Diego (7-8) this evening at Canyonview Aquatics Center. Senior utility Aimone Barabino had a career-high four goals for UCLA as 11 different Bruins scored.

The Bruins dominated the first period, 6-0. Junior Chris Fahlsing scored first on a power play (6:49), followed by a counter attack strike from sophomore Danny McClintick (4:43). Barabino then scored his first from set (3:33) to put UCLA up 3-0. Freshman Jack Fellner scored on a counter attack (3:09) and Barabino found the back of the net from two meters for the second time to make it 5-0 with 2:35. Senior Paul Pickell ended the scoring with 1:45 left in the first with a nice drive and finish.

The Bruins raced out to an 11-0 lead by halftime. Senior Lucas Reynolds opened the scoring in the second period with a goal from two meters at the 7:43 mark. Freshman Lovre Milos scored from the frontcourt (6:55) to make it 8-0 and then Barabino completed his hat trick (4:27) with an exclusion goal. The Bruins ended the first half with back-to-back frontcourt goals from sophomore Anthony Daboub (3:26) and McClintick (1:06), his second goal of the game.

The Bruins didn't let up in the third, outscoring the Tritons 5-0 to build a 16-0 lead. Junior Daniel Lenhart opened the third period with a 6-on-5 goal (6:50) and then Reynolds added his second from set (6:06) to put the Bruins up 13-0. Redshirt junior Cristiano Mirarchi added a power play goal (5:09) and then Barabino nailed his fourth from two meters (3:35). Mirarchi capped the scoring in the third with another power play score (1:20) to make it 16-0.

Freshman Ryder Roberts scored the Bruins' only goal of the fourth quarter with a shot from the frontcourt to make it 17-0 with 5:13 remaining. Chase Cockerill helped UCSD avoid the shutout with a power play goal with 4:46 to go. Jeffrey Jarvis provided the final of 17-2 with a goal from the frontcourt at the 4:10 mark.

The Bruins were 5-for-6 on power plays while UC San Diego was 1-for-10. Neither team attempted a penalty shot.

Redshirt junior James Hartshorne started in the cage for the Bruins and played the first half, pitching a shutout while registering nine saves. Junior Stephen White played the entire second half, picking up eight stops while allowing two goals. Cameron Ravanbach played the entire game in goal for UC San Diego and was credited with eight saves.

The Bruins return to action next weekend at UC Irvine for the SoCal Invitational. Pairings will be announced next week.
