Former UCLA pitcher Gerrit Cole will be taking the mound for the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday evening in the winner-take-all Game 5 of the National League Divisional Series. Adam Wainwright will be the starting pitcher for the opposing St. Louis Cardinals. The game will be at 5 p.m. PT tomorrow and broadcast live on TBS.

Cole started Game 2 of the NLDS for the Pirates and was outstanding, leading Pittsburgh to a 7-1 win over the Cardinals. The Santa Ana native tossed six strong innings, allowing one run on two hits and striking out five to earn the victory.

Cole, who was the No. 1 overall draft pick in the 2011 MLB Draft, made his major league debut for the Pirates on June 11 and earned his first career win that same day with a strong outing against the San Francisco Giants. Cole pitched 6.1 innings while allowing just two runs on seven hits. Overall, he made 19 starts for Pittsburgh, posting a 10-7 record with a 3.22 ERA and 100 strikeouts in 117.1 innings pitched. Cole also allowed just 28 walks all season and logged a WHIP of 1.17. In his last four regular season starts, Cole went 4-0 with a 1.54 ERA while allowing just 19 hits.

At UCLA, Cole enjoyed one of the finest careers of any pitcher in school history. He ranks second all-time at UCLA in career strikeouts (376), fourth in career games started (49) and sixth in career innings (322.1). Cole was also a two-time All-Pac-10 selection in 2009 and 2010, and earned honorable mention All-Pac-10 accolades in 2011.

His best season came in 2010, when he racked up 153 strikeouts and an 11-4 record while leading the Bruins to the College World Series Finals. In three seasons at UCLA, Cole went 21-20 with a 3.38 ERA while becoming the only pitcher at UCLA to log at least 100 strikeouts in three consecutive seasons.
