No. 1 UCLA Opens SoCals with a 23-2 Win Over Pomona-Pitzer

IRVINE, Calif. -- The No. 1 UCLA men's water polo team improved to 16-0 on the season with a 23-2 win over Pomona-Pitzer (3-13) this morning in the first round of the SoCal Invitational at UC Irvine. Freshman Lovre Milos, redshirt junior Cristiano Mirarchi and juniors Paul Reynolds and Chris Fahlsing each scored hat tricks for UCLA as 11 different Bruins scored.

UCLA dominated the first period, 6-0. Paul Reynolds scored first on a power play (4:36), followed by a goal from two meters by senior Aimone Barabino (3:41). The Bruins then scored three straight goals on counter attacks, two by Mirarchi (3:15 and 2:09) and one by Milos (2:43) to put UCLA up 5-0. Freshman Ryder Roberts ended the scoring with 0:41 left in the first with a score from the front court.

The Bruins raced out to an 12-0 lead, scoring the first six goals of the second period. Senior Chris Wendt opened the scoring in the second period with a counter attack strike at the 6:51 mark. Freshman Chancellor Ramirez scored from on a 6-on-5 opportunity (5:59) to make it 8-0. Fahlsing scored his first and Roberts scored his second, both on counter attacks (5:09, 4:39) to extend the lead to 10-0. Barabino scored his second from set (2:46) and Fahlsing added his second goal of the game from the frontcourt (1:58) to push the lead to 12-0. Pomona-Pitzer scored its first goal of the game on a penalty shot by James Baker (0:59) to provide the 12-1 halftime score.

The Bruins didn't let up in the third, outscoring the Sagehens 7-0. Ramirez notched his second goal of the game on a counter attack (6:16) and then Milos added his second with an exclusion goal (5:19) to put the Bruins up 14-1. The Bruins then scored three more counter attack goals in a span of 0:31. It started with Paul Reynolds' second goal (4:55), then Mirarchi completed his hat trick (4:36) and freshman Jack Fellner scored his first (4:24). After a goal from set by senior Lucas Reynolds (2:37), Fahlsing capped the scoring in the third with another counter attack score (0:35) to complete his hat trick and end the third period scoring with UCLA leading 19-1.

Baker scored a power play goal for Pomona-Pitzer to open the scoring in the fourth quarter (7:14). Milos completed his hat trick by converting a penalty shot (6:41) to make it 20-2. Fellner scored his second of the game with a nice shot from the front court (2:03) and then Paul Reynolds completed his hat trick with a counter attack strike (1:39). Sophomore Anthony Daboub ended the scoring with a score from the front court (0:49) to provide the final margin of 23-2.

The Bruins were 3-for-6 on power plays while Pomona-Pitzer was 1-for-5. Both teams were 1-for-1 on penalty shots.

The Bruins played all three goalkeepers. Redshirt freshman Garrett Danne made the start in the cage for UCLA, playing just the first quarter and pitched a shutout while making one save on a Sagehens' power play. Redshirt junior James Hartshorne played the second and third quarters in goal for the Bruins and allowed just the five meter penalty goal while registering five stops. Junior Stephen White played the fourth period, picking up two saves while allowing one power play goal. Austin Strong started in the cage for Pomona-Pitzer and played the first half while allowing 12 goals and tallying one save. Caleb Prater-Fahey played the second half, allowing 11 goals while making five stops.

The Bruins return to action at 2:00 p.m. today for a quarterfinal matchup with hosts No. 9 UC Irvine.
