SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team bounced back after two consecutive defeats to post a 16-2 win this afternoon at No. 16 Santa Clara. The Bruins improved to 19-2 overall while the Broncos dropped to 10-9. Senior Aimone Barabino and freshman Gordon Marshall led UCLA with three goals apiece as 10 different Bruins scored.
The Bruins dominated from the start, opening the first period with a 5-0 lead. Barabino scored two goals in the opening quarter, one from set and one on a counter attack. Freshman Lovre Milos and redshirt junior Cristiano Mirarchi added counter attack goals to make it 4-0. Senior Chris Wendt ended the scoring in the first with a goal from the front court.
David Guibord got the Broncos on the board with a power play goal. Barabino completed his hat trick with a goal from two meters to make it 6-1 UCLA. Bruin freshmen Chancellor Ramirez and Jack Fellner both scored on counter attacks to give UCLA an 8-1 lead at the break.
Guibord scored his second of the game in the third period on a counter attack. But the Bruins got four more goals from underclassmen in the third. Freshman Ryder Roberts found the back of the cage from the front court, and then Fellner (power play goal) and Ramirez (front court goal) each scored their second of the game to make it 11-2. Sophomore Anthony Daboub ended the scoring in the third period with a counter attack goal to give the Bruins a 12-2 advantage heading into the fourth.
UCLA dominated the fourth period, posting another four goals while pitching a shutout. Junior Chris Fahlsing made it 13-2 with a goal from the front court. Then it was the Marshall show as he scored a hat trick on three straight goals, the first on a counter attack and the next two from set to end the scoring at 16-2. All five UCLA freshmen scored as they combined to post 9-of-16 goals on the day.
Redshirt freshman Garrett Danner made the start in the cage for UCLA, playing the first quarter, making four saves while pitching a shutout. Redshirt junior James Hartshorne played all of the second quarter and half of the third while making four stops and allowing one power play goal. Junior Stephen White played the second half of the third and all of the fourth in goal and also made four saves while allowing one counter attack score.
The Bruins return to action on Friday, Oct. 25 when they travel to No. 8 UC Irvine for an MPSF match at 7:00 p.m.
