No. 4 Bruins Play Oregon State to a 1-1 Draw
By: UCLA Athletics

The fourth-ranked UCLA men’s soccer team played its fourth consecutive overtime match and picked up its third straight draw, playing the Oregon State Beavers to a 1-1 tie on Friday night at Drake Stadium. Junior Aaron Simmons scored UCLA’s only goal of the match.

The Bruins moved to 7-3-4 with the draw and are now 2-1-3 in Pac-12 play. Oregon State is now 7-6-2 overall and 0-4-2 in the conference. UCLA also improved its unbeaten streak over Oregon State to 17 straight matches without a loss.

UCLA got out to a fast start, quickly going ahead by a goal in the seventh minute. After the Bruins earned a corner, senior Victor Munoz stepped and played a beautiful ball in the box to Simmons, who easily headed it home to the near post for his second of the year. From there, the Bruins controlled the majority of possession for the rest of the half and outshot the Beavers, 7-1, to take a 1-0 lead to the locker room.

At the start of the second half, Oregon State had a golden opportunity when Borce Atanasov was taken down in the box, giving the Beavers a penalty. Will Seymore stepped up to take the penalty for Oregon State, but blasted the ball off the crossbar and UCLA maintained its 1-0 lead. The Bruins almost went ahead by two in the 63rd minute when junior Leo Stolz dribbled down the right side of the box and aimed for the top shelf. However, Oregon State keeper Matt Bersano was able to just get a hand on it and knock the ball out of play.

The Beavers started to push more men forward as the second half wore on, but UCLA continually thwarted their attack. But then in the 89th minute, Oregon State found the equalizer when Matt Arbogast took a shot from the top of the box that deflected off of a UCLA defender and into the goal to tie the match at 1-1 and send the game into overtime.

Neither side saw much of a chance in the first overtime, though sophomore Jordan Vale came close when he put a low, lining shot on net that was saved by Bersano. The second overtime session saw much of the same as neither side could find the back of the net, ending the match in a draw.

Overall, UCLA outshot Oregon State 16-11 in the match while junior keeper Earl Edwards Jr. made two saves.

“Once again we were in a position to win the match and couldn’t finish it,” head coach Jorge Salcedo said. “We’re having difficulty ending games and finishing off the match, but we will regroup and get ready for Sunday, which now becomes a must-win for us if we want to win the Pac-12. I’m confident that we’ll come out ready to go on Sunday.”

UCLA (7-3-4, 2-1-3) will wrap up the 2013 home season on Sunday, Oct. 27 at 1 p.m. against the third-ranked Washington Huskies (10-0-4, 3-0-2) out at Drake Stadium. The match will be televised live by the Pac-12 Networks. Before the match, the Bruins will honor their seven graduating seniors from the 2013 squad.
