TEMPE, Ariz. - UCLA won 11 of 16 events on Saturday at #22 Arizona State, as senior Ting Quah, junior Noelle Tarazona and freshman Madison White each won a pair of races in a 183-113 victory. Sophomore Katie Kinnear and freshmen Linnea Mack and Ashley Tse also won events, while the Bruins won both relays.
The Bruin relay got the meet off to a good start, as Mack and fellow freshman Brigitte Winkler, Quah and fellow senior Kathryn Murphy posted a time of 1:43.25. The quartet of White and juniors Jessica Khojasteh, Tarazona and Taylor Carlson finished third at 1:44.46. Arizona State bounced back with a win in the 1000 Freestyle. Senior Lauren Baker was second with a 10:01.23, while junior Kacey Milligan placed fourth at 10:23.61.
The next Freestyle event went to the Bruins, as Quah won the 200 in a time of 1:49.38. Junior Ally Loper placed third at 1:50.96. White made it back-to-back for the Bruins, winning the 100 Backstroke for the second day in a row in a time of 55.07 to post an NCAA 'B' qualifying time. Kinnear was third at 55.76, while senior Jesse Bergman placed fourth at 56.67. The Sun Devils responded with a win in the 100 Breaststroke. Tse was second with a 1:04.65, while Winkler was fourth at 1:05.65.
UCLA got back in the win column in the 200 Butterfly, posting a 1-2-4 finish. Tarazona had a 2:00.32 to take the event, Senior Anna Senko was second (2:01.36) and sophomore Arlyn Upshaw placed fourth (2:05.17). Heading into the first break, Mack recorded a win in the 50 Free in a time of 23.20.
Out of the first swimming break, Quah led a 1-2-3 finish for the Bruins in the 100 Free. The senior had a 50.59, followed by Murphy (51.19) and junior Monica Dornick, who dead-heated for third with a 51.61. Another 1-2-3 showing for the Bruins came next in the 200 Back, as White scored the Backstroke double with a 1:59.25. Kinnear was second (2:00.78) and Bergman third (2:01.57).
Tse recorded the Bruins' fifth straight swimming victory in the 200 Breast, tying ASU for the top spot with a 2:18.09. Khojasteh was third with a 2:22.40. Arizona State claimed its second distance Freestyle event with the 500, as Baker was second (4:56.12) and Loper placed third (4:57.98). Going into the second swimming break, Kinnear claimed the 100 Fly with a time of 54.58, leading a 1-2-3 finish. Mack was second (56.13) and Senko placed third (56.19).
In the 1-Meter diving event, Lenz placed third at 269.55, Monahan was fourth (244.25) and Guzman fifth (234.70).
Out of the break, the Bruins had another 1-2-3 finish in the 400 Individual Medley. Tarazona was first (4:22.23), followed by Baker (4:25.51) and Tse (4:28.62). A victory in the 400 Free Relay closed out the meet. Quah, Murphy, Senko and Bergman posted a time of 3:25.93, while Khojasteh, Dornick, Carlson and Tarazona placed third (3:28.39).
The Bruins are off from competition next week. Next up, the swimming team heads to Las Vegas for the UNLV Fall Invitational (Nov. 21-23), while the diving squad travels to Tucson for the Arizona Diving Invitational (Nov. 22-24).
