LONG BEACH, Calif. -- The No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team posted a 9-5 win at No. 8 Long Beach State on Saturday afternoon. The Bruins improved to 24-2 overall and 4-1 in the MPSF (tied for first) while the 49ers dropped to 18-9 overall and 1-4 in the league.
The Bruins dominated the first quarter, jumping out to a 3-0 lead on three power plays. Lucas Reynolds scored the first goal at the 5:54 mark of the first period. Junior Chris Fahlsing made it 2-0 with a 6-on-5 opportunity (2:19) and then senior Chris Wendt capped the scoring in the opening stanza with an exclusion goal (0:51).
Zacchary Kappos got the 49ers on the board with a goal from the front court (7:11). Then freshman Lovre Milos scored on a counter attack to put the Bruins up 4-1 (6:01). Kappos scored his second of the game for LBSU on a power play to trim the lead to 4-2 (3:57). Paul Reynolds ended the scoring in the first half with a counter attack strike (3:22) to give the Bruins a 5-2 lead at the break.
The 49ers won the third period scoring two goals while holding the Bruins to just one. Milos Vrzic scored a goal from the front court to trim the lead to 5-3 (7:08). Then Dimitrios Lappas cut the lead to one with an exclusion goal at the 4:07 mark of the third period. Lucas Reynolds extended the lead to 6-4 with a goal from set (2:00) to end the scoring in the third.
The Bruins put the game away with three consecutive goals to open the fourth quarter. Sophomore Anthony Daboub scored on a 6-on-5 opportunity to make it 7-4 (4:40). Then sophomore Danny McClintick scored on a counter to extend the lead to 8-4 (3:53). Paul Reynolds scored his second of the game on a power play to give UCLA a 9-4 lead (1:57). Devin Mefford scored a goal from set at the buzzer to provide the 9-5 final score.
Redshirt freshman Garrett Danner made the start in the cage for UCLA and played the entire contest, registering 12 saves. Pavo Ljepopio was credited with 11 stops in the cage for Long Beach State.
The Bruins return to action next week when they travel to Pepperdine for an 11:00 a.m. game on Nov. 16 and return home to host UC Santa Barbara at 11:00 a.m. on Nov. 17.
