UCLA Shuts Out Kentucky, 3-0, in NCAA Second Round
By: UCLA Athletics
The UCLA women's soccer team shut out Kentucky in the NCAA second round for the second year in a row, defeating the Wildcats, 3-0, on Friday evening at Drake Stadium. Defender Caprice Dydasco scored a pair of goals, the first goals of her collegiate career, and forward Courtney Proctor had a goal and an assist.

Much like in its first round game, the second-seeded Bruins (19-1-2) jumped ahead early, scoring at 4:15 on a bomb by Dydasco from the left side to the far post. Sam Mewis was credited with the assist.

The Bruins continued to pressure in the first half, outshooting the Wildcats, 12-2 in the period, with a few near misses and saved shots preventing UCLA from extending its lead. Jenna Richmond missed just wide in the seventh minute, and Mewis had a shot saved on a counter-attack in the 10th minute. The Bruins had two chances in the 24th minute. Abby Dahlkemper headed a free kick towards goal, but it was saved by Kentucky goalkeeper Kayla King. The rebound kicked out to Mewis on the left side, but her shot was cleared off the line by a Wildcat defender.

King continued to make big plays for the Wildcats in the beginning of the second half. In the 47th minute, she made a huge one-handed save on a Mewis shot, and then had saves on three consecutive UCLA shots in a three-minute span.

The Bruins broke through with an insurance goal at 70:14 when Proctor beat King with a shot to the far post from the right side. Mewis and Chelsea Stewart earned the assists.

"We talked about it at halftime and said we need to put this game away," said UCLA head coach Amanda Cromwell. "It took a little bit longer to put the nail in the coffin, so to speak, but Caprice had a fabulous game. Anytime your left back is scoring two goals, and a Courtney Proctor, a sub coming off the bench has a goal and an assist, it's big."

Kentucky (14-7-1) challenged in the 78th minute with a free kick at the top of the box, but Arin Gilliland's free kick was blocked, and the resulting shot off the corner kick went wide.

Dydasco put the game away at 80:09 with her second goal of the game, one-time a cross from Proctor to the far post to give UCLA a 3-0 lead.

"I haven't scored since I've been here, so it's awesome," said Dydasco. "I feel like I'm dreaming. It's too unbelievable. But my teammates made it possible. They set me up nicely. It was easy; I had good surrounding players to help me out."

UCLA will face Pac-12 rival Stanford in the third round on Sunday at 4pm at Drake Stadium. The Cardinal defeated No. 3 seed South Carolina in the earlier game, 1-0, on an overtime goal by Taylor Uhl. UCLA defeated Stanford earlier this season in Palo Alto, 2-1 in double overtime, on a Lauren Kaskie golden goal.

"It's the matchup we just knew we would see in the postseason," said Cromwell. "They're a very good team. It's a shame you have to play such a good team so early in the Sweet Sixteen. They're also another Pac-12 team, and you want the Pac-12 to do well. We're rooting for Colorado on Sunday, and we'd rather Stanford be playing someone else and be rooting for them, but it's nice to be home and hosting them, and it's going to be a good quality game."
