The UCLA men’s golf program signed three Southern California junior players during the November signing period, Head Coach Derek Freeman announced this week.
Brandon Mai (Poway, CA / Rancho Bernardo HS), Victor Ponte (Camarillo, CA / Rio Mesa HS) and Corey Shaun (Encinitas, CA / Torrey Pines HS) have signed National Letters of Intent and will join the UCLA program in the Fall of 2014.
“We are extremely excited about this class coming to UCLA,” said Freeman. “All of these players wanted to be part of our program and great university. Corey, Victor, and Brandon have been very successful in their junior careers, and we believe they will have outstanding careers at UCLA.”
Mai, whose sister Brittany is a junior on the UCLA women’s golf team, won the SCPGA Junior Amateur Championship in August with scores of 72-70-67—209 (-7). Two weeks later, he tied for 10th at the AJGA Stockton Convention and Visitor’s Bureau Jr. Open on the strength of an opening round 65 (-7).
In June, Ponte tied for second at the AJGA ClubCorp Mission Hills Desert Junior, posting scores of 67-72-71—210 (-6). A month earlier, he tied for 10th at the AJGA Junior at River Ridge. At the 2013 U.S. Junior Amateur, he tied for 57th in stroke play before being eliminated in a playoff prior to the match play competition.
Shaun, ranked 38th nationally by GolfWeek and 47th by the AJGA, advanced to the Round of 32 this summer at the U.S. Junior Amateur. In stroke play, he tied for 45th before winning his first round match. On the AJGA circuit, he won the Junior Challenge in July with scores of 69-68-68—205 (-11). In June, he also tied for fourth at the PING Phoenix Junior on the strength of a final round 68.
