Senior defender Chris Wendt ends his career making the MPSF All-Academic Team all four seasons.

Seven Bruins Named to the 2013 MPSF All-Academic Team

BREA, Calif. - Seniors Paul Pickell, Chris Wendt and Aimone Barabino, juniors Paul Reynolds, Cristiano Mirarchi and Chris Fahlsing and sophomore Danny McClintick all captured MPSF All-Academic accolades, as announced by the conference office Friday. 

Pickell, a senior attacker from Santa Ana, arrived at UCLA in the fall of 2009 from Foothill High School. He had a grade point average of 3.117. He played in 90 matches, making 14 starts in his career, totalling 36 goals, 25 assists and 41 steals. He scored a career-high three goals in a win over George Washington (Sept. 8, 2012) and in the NCAA semifinal win over St. Francis Brooklyn (Dec. 1, 2012). This past season, he scored 11 goals while shooting 47.8 percent (11-for-23). He also had 11 steals on the year.

Barabino, a senior utility from Recco, Italy, arrived at UCLA in the fall of 2010 from La Scuola d’Italia Guglielmo Marconi in New York City. He had a grade point average of 3.327. He played in 106 matches, making 22 starts in his career. This two-time All-Conference and now three-time MPSF All-Academic player led the Bruins in exclusions drawn in each of the last three seasons. He totaled 81 goals and 218 earned exclusions in his career. He scored a career-high four goals this year in a win at UC San Diego and finished sixth on the team in 2013 with 29 goals, converting on 54.7 percent (29-of-53). He also registered 59 exclusions drawn and 14 steals this past season.

Wendt, a senior defender from River Forest, Ill., arrived at UCLA in the fall of 2009 from Fenwick High School. He had a grade point average of 3.381. He played in 113 matches, making 82 starts in his career while registering 80 goals, 59 assists and 70 steals. This All-American has also been named to the All-Academic team each year he has been on campus and was named as an honorable mention All-MPSF selection in 2013. He has scored a career-high three goals on five different occasions including this year in a win at Loyola Marymount. This season, he tied for seventh on the team in scoring with 28 goals, shooting 43.1 percent (28-of-65). He also registered 31 steals (fourth on the team), 18 assists and led the Bruins with 16 field blocks.

Mirarchi, a junior utility from Rome, Italy (Evangelista Torricelli), had a grade point average of 3.525, tops on the team. This season, he tied for seventh on the team in scoring with 28 goals, shooting 48.3 percent (28-of-58). He also registered 40 assists (third on the team), 23 steals and 13 field blocks (third on the squad).

Reynolds, a junior utility from Santa Ana, Calif. (Foothill HS), had a grade point average of 3.170. This season, he led the Bruins in scoring with 47 goals, which ranked 17th in the MPSF (1.57 goals per game). He also registered 39 steals (second on the team), 24 assists and 12 field blocks (fourth on the squad).

Fahlsing, a junior attacker from San Diego, Calif. (Cathedral Catholic HS), had a grade point average of 3.325. He concluded the season with 14 goals, 17 steals and nine assists and earned MPSF All-Academic Team honors for the second straight season.

McClintick, a sophomore utility from Agoura Hills, Calif. (Agoura HS), had a grade point average of 3.182. This season, he was second on the team with 38 goals and led the Bruins in assists with 62. He also registered 24 steals and was second on the squad with 15 field blocks.

The Bruins finished the 2013 season with the best overall record in the country at 28-4 and finished in a three-way tie for fir st in the MPSF at 7-1. The Bruins four losses were by a combined total of five goals, also the best in the nation and UCLA was the only team in the country to finish the year with a winning record (2-1) against six-time defending champion USC.
