LOS ANGELES – The UCLA track and field team took home six event titles and placed in the top five in 17 events in a split squad effort this weekend. The majority of the Bruins competed at the New Mexico Team Invite while members of the distance squad ran at the UW Invitational.
“I thought the teams showed great improvement from last week’s competition,” director of track and field Mike Maynard said. “We had a number of Bruin athletes who moved into the top tier of performances in their events on the NCAA list.”
Two performances highlighted the weekend for UCLA as Kylie Price leaped 21-2 in the long jump which marks the top jump in the country. Kelsey Smith also ran one of the top marks in NCAA competition as she posted a 9:04.31 in the 3,000m which ranks as the second best in UCLA history.
“I was especially impressed with the performances by Kelsey Smith in the 3,000m and Kylie Price in the long jump,” Maynard said. “On the men's side, I felt that Michael Woepse's pole vault clearance led the team. There were solid performances by jumpers Cody Crampton in the high jump, who cleared 7-0 for the second consecutive week and Michael Perry, who jumped over 24-0 in the long jump.”
Woepse won the pole vault for the second consecutive week as he cleared 17-10.50. Perry placed second in the long jump with a mark of 24-02.50 while Crampton also placed second in the high jump with a mark of 7-00.25. Nick Hartle placed fourth in the mile with a time of 4:07.31.
“Nick Hartle's indoor mile debut at 4:07 is deceivingly strong,” Maynard added. “At this altitude Nick's mile converts to a 4:02. We are looking forward to a great week of training and another great competition at Texas A&M next weekend.”
The throws proved to be another strong point for the Bruins as Ida Storm won the weight throw with a 68-05.00. On the men’s side Alec Faldermeyer won the weight throw with a mark of 66-03.00. In the shot put, UCLA went 1-2, with freshman Braheme Days winning the event with a heave of 61-11.00. Nick Scarvelis followed with a 61-04.75.
Next weekend the Bruins will head to College Station, Texas, to participate in the Texas A&M Aggie Invitational. The two-day event will begin on Friday, Feb. 7, at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium.
