Duke Upsets Fourth-Seeded UCLA in ITA Team Indoor Final
By: UCLA Athletics
Charlottesville, Va. - For the second year in a row the UCLA women's tennis team suffered a close loss in the final of the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships, falling to No. 10 Duke, 4-3 in a thrilling final at the Boar's Head Sports Club on Monday. With the loss, the Bruins fall to 8-1 on the year, while the Blue Devils keep their perfect record intact at 8-0.

This year's UCLA-Duke showdown was a rematch of the 2012 final that the Bruins won 4-0 to claim the program's first-ever National Team Indoor title. For the first two hours of Monday's match it looked like there would be a repeat performance of that 2012 championship match, as UCLA stormed out to a 3-0 lead after winning the doubles point and taking quick wins at court Nos. 5 and 6. Junior Kaitlin Ray was first off in singles, downing Marianne Jodoin, 6-1, 6-1 at court No. 6. That win was followed by another straight-set victory, this time at court No. 5 where Catherine Harrison was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Rachel Kahan.

UCLA was suddenly within a point of clinching the match and had also won the first set on three of the four remaining courts. Alyssa Smith tallied the first point for the Blue Devils when she upset 36th-ranked Kyle McPhillips, 3-6, 6-1, (10-8) at court No. 4. Another upset would soon follow, as 45th-ranked Ester Goldfeld downed ninth-ranked Chanelle Van Nguyen, 6-4, 7-5 to cut the lead to 3-2.

Duke's Beatrice Capra then notched a slight upset at court No. 1, as she battled back for a 1-6, 6-3, (10-7) victory over top-ranked Robin Anderson.

Capra's victory meant that the match would be decided at the No. 3 spot, where 49th-ranked Hanna Mar and 24th-ranked Jennifer Brady were headed to a 10-point tiebreaker in place of a third set. Brady served for the match up 5-4 in the second set but couldn't hold on, as Mar came back for a 3-6, 7-6(3), (10-3) victory to help her team to this year's championship.

UCLA's next match is a home contest against Pepperdine on Feb. 19 at 1:30 p.m.
