UCLA Track and Field Wraps Up Split Weekend
By: UCLA Athletics

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA track and field team wrapped up its second weekend in three weeks in which the team was split between Albuquerque, N.M., and Seattle, Wash. The Bruins posted some impressive marks at the Don Kirby Elite Invite and the Husky Classic.

The weekend was highlighted by a season-best mark of 70-1.50 by Ida Storm in the weight throw. The mark secured the win for Storm and was the sixth best in the country this indoor season.

“On the women's side Brea and Ida both took another step towards their championship form,” director of track and field Mike Maynard said. “Brea's hurdle race showed that she is coming into shape at the right time, just as she did last season. With a little more sprinting under her belt, she will be ready to race at the MPSF Championships in two weeks. Ida showed great competitive poise, by improving throughout the competition to win the meet, and set a seasonal best on her last throw.”

Also earning top-5 finishes for UCLA was Mike Woepse in the pole vault. Woepse once again cleared 18 feet with a second place mark of 18-0.50.

Nicholas Scarvelis finished third in the shot put with a mark of 62-1.75 while Alec Faldermeyer also finished third in the weight throw with a mark of 67-8. Kylie Price placed fourth in the long jump with a mark of 20-5.75.

“Mike Woepse's clearance of 18'1/2" was another step forward in what has already been a steadily developing season,” Maynard said. “He's on the biggest poles he has jumped on now, and is ready to make a big breakthrough in the near future. Alec Faldermeyer showed good improvement, and he has begun to show the improvement he had been demonstrating in practices over the past few weeks. I thought that Pete Lauderdale did a very good job in the 400m by setting a new personal best indoors, and adding a solid relay leg in the 4 x 400m.”

UCLA will train through the week before returning to the oval for the MPSF Championships on Friday, Feb. 28. The meet will be held at the Dempsey Indoor Arena on the University of Washington campus.
