LOS ANGELES - The No. 2 UCLA women's tennis team picked up its 10th victory of the season on Friday afternoon, edging No. 4 Cal, 4-3 in a non-conference match at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

The Bruins (10-1) had yet to surrender a doubles point in any match this season and Friday was no different, as UCLA claimed the point following a pair of dominating 6-1 and 6-2 wins at court Nos. 1 and 2, respectively.

Despite the early 1-0 lead, UCLA knew that Cal (5-2) was still going to come out strong in singles play, as the Bears boast ranked singles players at every position.

The first three singles matches to finish were all decided by match tiebreakers in place of a third set. Although second-ranked Robin Anderson battled back to take the second set against 37th-ranked Anett Schutting at court No. 1, Schutting prevailed in the end, posting a 6-2, 3-6, (10-6) victory to tie the match at 1-1. Back at court No. 5, 44th-ranked Catherine Harrison fought off two match points in her match tiebreaker with 84th-ranked Klara Fabikova, winning 6-2, 3-6, (13-11) to give the Bruins a 2-1 lead.

Cal, however, would again tie things up when 66th-ranked Lynn Chi upset 27th-ranked Kyle McPhillips, 6-1, 5-7, (13-11) at court No. 5. McPhillips was down 6-1, 5-1 before storming back to win six straight games and take the second set 7-5. She also had multiple match points in the match tiebreaker but was unable to convert.

Freshman Jennifer Brady, who is ranked No. 27 nationally, gave UCLA a 3-2 lead at court No. 3, where she was a 6-1, 7-6(3) winner over 16th-ranked Zsofi Susanyi. At the point of Brady's victory, two matches remained on court. Although Kaitlin Ray was down a set and a break at court No. 6, the Bruins were still in a good position, as ninth-ranked Chanelle Van Nguyen had a commanding lead over 15th-ranked Denise Starr at court No. 2. Van Nguyen would eventually close things out, posting a 7-6(6), 6-1 win for UCLA's fouth point of the afternoon.

Court No. 6 was in match point at the time of Van Nguyen's victory, as Bear freshman Maegan Manassee outlasted Ray, 7-5, 6-4 to make the final team score 4-3.

The Bruins' next match will be a home contest against St. Mary's on Feb. 28.
