No. 12 UCLA Baseball Drops Series Finale to No. 22 Cal Poly, 9-1
By: UCLA Athletics

The 12th-ranked UCLA Baseball team was defeated by No. 22 Cal Poly on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Mustangs, 9-1, at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Casey Bloomquist earned the win for Cal Poly, allowing one run on four hits in five innings pitched. Sophomore Cody Poteet took the loss for the Bruins, giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits in 2.2 innings of work.

Cal Poly jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first beginning when Tim Wise and Jordan Ellis reached base on a hit by pitch and a single. Poteet recovered to get Nick Torres to ground into a 5-3 double play, but on the next batter he surrendered a two-run homer to Brian Mundell to give the Mustangs the 2-0 lead. The Bruins responded in the bottom half of the inning though, getting a run off of Bloomquist to cut Cal Poly’s lead in half. With one out, freshman Brett Stephens doubled to right-center to bring up junior Shane Zeile. Zeile then brought Stephens home with a single up the middle for his fourth RBI of the season.

The Mustangs brought their lead back up to two in the top of the second, as Chris Hoo singled home Zack Zehner with two outs to make it 3-1 in Cal Poly’s favor. Cal Poly then tacked on two more in the top of the third, as Zehner singled to right to score Torres from second. On the same play, the ball got by sophomore Christoph Bono in right, allowing Jimmy Allen to score as well and increasing the Mustang lead to four.

UCLA looked to threaten in the bottom of the third, as senior Brian Carroll and Stephens reached on a walk and a single respectively with one out. However, Zeile grounded into a double play on the next at-bat to end the inning.

Cal Poly went on to open the game up in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs off of freshman Nick Kern. With runners on second and third and two out, Torres came up again and scored both runners with a single up the middle. After Torres advanced to second on the throw home, Mundell came to the plate and singled through the left side to make it 8-1 Mustangs.

From there Cal Poly was able to keep the Bruin offense off the board before adding a run in the top of the ninth on an RBI groundout by Mark Mathias. UCLA couldn’t muster anything in the bottom of the ninth and the Mustangs went on to win by a score of 9-1.

Overall, Stephens and Bono led the way at the plate, each recording two hits including a double for Stephens.

UCLA (4-3) will conclude its eight-game homestand on Tuesday as the Bruins take on UC Santa Barbara (3-1) at 6 p.m. out at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Game Notes: UCLA's hitters extended their streak of getting hit by a pitch to seven consecutive games, bringing UCLA's season total to 11 batters hit by a pitch...Christoph Bono logged his third multi-hit game of the season, equaling his total from all of last year…Max Schuh pitched a career-high two innings in relief and has yet to allow a run in four appearances thus far…David Berg made his 106th career appearance in today’s game, which is five appearances shy for the second-most all-time in UCLA history.
