Volleyball Handed Straight Set Decision at No. 7 UC Santa Barbara

Fifth-ranked UCLA dropped a straight-set decision at No. 7 UC Santa Barbara in an MPSF contest played on Wednesday night. Scores of the match were 20-25, 19-25, 20-25. UCLA is now 13-6 overall and 10-5 in league action.

UCLA was outhit by the Gauchos .429 to .269, lost the battle of the block 8-5, was out served 6-2 and saw UCSB manage a 78% sideout percentage to 62% for the Bruins. Gonzalo Quiroga was the lone Bruin in double figures in kills with 12. He joined Clayton Paullin with three blocks. Robart Page added eight kills. Hagen Smith had five digs and 29 set assists.

Santa Barbara took control of set one by jumping out to a 1-5 lead. UCLA battled back to take a 11-10 edge on an ace by Paullin. The score was tied at 15 and 16 before the Gauchos registered the next three points and then went on  to capture the set 20-25.

Set two saw UCLA own the early lead at 4-2 and 6-4. The score was even at points six through 10. UCSB then moved to a 10-12 margin and worked it up to 18-23 before settling for a 19-25 victory.

UCSB grabbed the early lead at 7-8 and was never headed in set three. The Gauchos enjoyed leads of 11-14 and 16-22 before taking the set 20-25.

UCLA returns home to Pauley Pavilion on Saturday night to host UC San Diego in an MPSF match. First serve will be at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the door.
