Volleyball Wins in Three Over UC San Diego
By: UCLA Athletics

Fifth-ranked UCLA returned home for the first time in almost a month and dealt UC San Diego a straight-set loss in Pauley Pavilion on Saturday night. Scores of the match were 25-18, 25-21, 25-15. The win lifted the Bruin records to 14-6 overall and 11-5 in MPSF action.

The Bruins outhit UCSD .414 to 0.79 on the match and won the battle at the net 12.0 blocks to 3.5. Freshman Mitch Stahl totaled a season-best seven blocks while freshman Jackson Bantle and Robart Page each matched their season-highs with five blocks each.

In set one, UCLA grabbed an 8-7 lead and never gave it back. Three straight aces by Gonzalo Quiroga made it 11-7 Bruins. The visitors cut the margin to 13-12, but kills from Spencer Rowe and Page provided a 19-15 cushion. UCLA went on to a 25-18 win. Page and Bantle finished with four kills apiece and Stahl added three blocks.

UCLA took a 4-2 lead in set two on a Rowe block and made it 11-7 on a Quiroga blast. The difference was 17-9 following a Bantle kill. UCSD sliced the margin to 22-21, but a Quiroga ace and a Page kill restored order. The Bruins captured the set 25-21.

In set three, a Stahl block made it 6-3 and his kill made it 8-5 Bruins. UCSD closed to within one point at 10-9, but the Bruins soon pulled away and took a 15-9 edge on a Bantle kill. A Page kill put UCLA ahead by a touchdown at 21-14. Points from Bantle and Stahl finished off the Tritons and gave the Bruins a 25-15 decision.

Page led UCLA with 12 kills and added five kills. Bantle, who had five blocks, and Quiroga each finished with nine kills. Stahl had four kills, hit .600 and made seven blocks. Hagen Smith registered 32 set assists and a team-best nine digs.

UCLA remains at home next week to host No. 4 Pepperdine on Tuesday night and No. 6 USC on Saturday evening. Tickets will be available at the door.
