Bruins Beat Sun Devils for First MPSF Victory
By: UCLA Athletics
Junior Emily Donohoe scored four goals and the second-ranked UCLA women’s water polo team defeated No. 5 Arizona State 11-7 at UCLA’s Spieker Aquatic Center Sunday.

The Bruins (17-2, 1-0) beat the Sun Devils (9-6, 0-1) for the 17th time in 18 meetings and avenged last year’s conference-opening loss to ASU.

The Bruins never trailed in this game, taking a 2-1 lead in the first quarter on goals by senior Becca Dorst (6:00) from two meters and Rachel Fattal (5:42) on a counterattack. ASU got on the board with a two-meter goal by sophomore Abbey Kerth.

In the second quarter, they scored four goals, two by Donohoe (6:37 and 2:28) and one each by Danielle Ferraro (4:36) and Fattal (1:30). ASU scored on a goal from Brazilian freshman Izabella Chiappini. The Bruins led at halftime, 6-2.

In the third quarter, ASU outscored the Bruins 3-2 on goals by Liz Kreek (5:42), Kate Enoka (3:24) and Ao Gao (2:36) to close the gap to 8-5. The UCLA goals were scored by Fattal (6:53) and Kodi Hill (5:31) with each player assisting on the other’s goal. At 1:49 in the third period, Hill was whistled for a foul and sent off for an exclusion, and ASU called a timeout. The Sun Devils’ power play ended when their shot hit the post and went out of bounds.

The Sun Devils continued to press in the final quarter, and the Bruins responded with three goals, two more by Donohoe (6:29 and 5:11) and one by Kodi Hill (2:11). Kreek and Annie Kertes scored for the visitors.

Fourth-year goalkeeper Sami Hill made four saves, and her counterpart, E.B. Keeve of ASU had five, including a blocked penalty shot.
