SEATTLE - Junior Ally Carda led off the game with a home run and also struck out seven in four innings of relief, but the top-ranked Bruins dropped a 10-2, five-inning decision at #5 Washington on Sunday at Husky Softball Stadium.

The Bruins fall to 27-2 overall and 4-1 in Pac-12 play, while the Huskies improve to 21-6 and 2-2 in league action.

Carda gave up three runs (one earned) and five hits in her four innings of work, relieving senior Jessica Hall, who was unable to record an out, allowing seven runs (three earned), three hits and three walks. The Bruins had just two hits as a team, both in the first inning.

The Bruins jumped on the Huskies with a pair in the top of the first, as Carda led the game off hitting an 0-1 pitch out to left-center for her fourth homer of the season to make it 1-0 UCLA. Freshman Delaney Spaulding followed with a walk, stole second and scored on a single to right-center by junior Stephany LaRosa to increase UCLA’s advantage to 2-0.

Washington came back in a big way in its half of the first, scoring nine times. Victoria Hayward led off with a bunt single, Jennie McNeill singled up the middle and Hooch Fagaly walked to load the bases. Kaitlin Inglesby followed with a grounder to second, but it went through the legs of junior Gracie Goulder, allowing Hayward and McNeill to score to tie the game at two. A walk to Kylee Lahners re-loaded the bases and a free pass to Ali Aguilar forced home Fagaly with the Huskies’ third run.

Whitney Jones singled to right to bring home Inglesby to make it 4-2. Carda came in to relieve Hall and struck out the next two batters, but a hit by pitch of Hayward forced home Lahners with Washington’s fifth run. McNeill followed with a single to left to bring in Aguilar to make it 6-2. A two-run single to right for Fagaly plated Jones and Hayward with runs seven and eight. Inglesby then laid down a bunt single in front of the plate to score McNeill with Washington’s ninth run.

After the Inglesby single, Carda retired the next seven batters, with a three-strikeout inning in the second and another 1-2-3 frame in the third.

In the fourth, the Huskies tacked on the mercy-rule run. Fagaly led off with a single to left-center and was pinch-run for by Rylleigh Zbaraschuk, who moved to second when Inglesby reached on a fielder’s choice grounder to the left side. One out later, Aguilar singled to right to plate Zbaraschuk with the Huskies’ 10th run.

The Bruins and the Huskies play the rubber game of their series on Monday at 2 p.m. The game will be televised live on Pac-12 Networks.
