WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Junior Ally Carda has been named Pac-12 Conference Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season after helping the top-ranked Bruins to a win against #6 Arizona and a pair of victories at #5 Washington over an eight-day span.
Carda pitched in all four games for UCLA from last Monday to this Monday, striking out 27 in 22 2/3 innings, posting two wins, a save and a 0.31 earned run average.
Carda began the week by earning a save against #6 Arizona on Monday, striking out seven in 4 2/3 shutout innings, allowing two hits and three walks. She started and tossed the first three innings, striking out one in the first, two in the second and one in the third. Carda came in to relieve in the sixth and retired five of the seven batters she faced, including striking out the side in the seventh.
On Saturday at #5 Washington, Carda tossed a four-hit complete game, fanning eight and allowing two unearned runs, four hits and three walks. She escaped a first and third with one out jam in the first inning, as well as a second and first, no out situation in the fourth. Carda would retire the last 12 of the game, striking out a pair in the fifth and two more in the seventh.
Carda entered Sunday's game in relief and struck out seven in four innings, giving up three runs (one earned) and five hits. She had 1-2-3 innings in the second and third, striking out the side in the second.
On Monday, Carda tossed her seventh complete-game shutout of the season, striking out five and giving up just four hits. She had 1-2-3 innings in the second, fourth and seventh, striking out one batter in the first, second, third, sixth and seventh.
Carda leads the Bruins with a 0.82 earned run average, a 17-1 record and 126 strikeouts in 110 2/3 innings.
Carda earned her first Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week honor on Feb. 25, the same day she was named NFCA and USA Softball National Player of the Week. She is the first Bruin since Megan Langenfeld in 2009 to earn multiple conference Pitcher of the Week awards in the same season.
UCLA, which has received 56 Pac-10/12 Pitcher of the Week honors all-time, has earned five weekly awards this season, the most in the Pac-12. Three of them have been Pac-12 Players of the Week (Alyssa Tiumalu - Feb. 11 and Mysha Sataraka - Feb. 25 and March 17).
