LOS ANGELES - The third-ranked UCLA men's tennis fought back after losing the doubles point to No. 18 Cal on Friday afternoon, cruising in singles play for an eventual 4-1 win over the Golden Bears in a Pac-12 showdown at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

Friday's doubles point was about as close as it gets, as it ultimately came down to a tiebreaker at court No. 2. Despite having two match points in the breaker, UCLA was unable to hold on, as Joseph Di Giulio and Clay Thompson suffered an 8-7(9) loss to 67th-ranked Andre Goransson and Ben McLachlan to give Cal a 1-0 lead heading into singles play. The one bright spot for the Bruins in doubles came at court No. 1, where Marcos Giron and Karue Sell upset 14th-ranked Gregory Bayane and Chase Melton, 8-3.

UCLA (16-2; 3-0 Pac-12) was able to shrug off the setback in doubles, storming out in singles to win first sets on all six courts. In fact, Di Giulio and Thompson were the first two players to finish their matches, losing a combined three games. Di Giulio was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Mads Engsted at court No. 6, while the top-ranked Thompson downed 89th-ranked Campbell Johnson, 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 2 position.

With UCLA now up 2-1, freshman Mackenzie McDonald, the nation's 33rd-ranked singles player, put the Bruins within a point of clinching the win when he registered a 6-2, 6-2 win over Filip Bergevi at court No. 3.

At the time of McDonald's victory, most of the fans in attendance headed back to court No. 4, where 73rd-ranked Gage Brymer was on the verge of closing out Goransson to clinch the victory for UCLA. Brymer did just that, posting a 6-4, 6-3 win to give the Bruins the 4-1 victory.

At the time of Brymer's win, Giron was leading McLachlan, 6-3, 3-6, 2-1 at court No. 1, and Sell owned a 7-6(2), 4-3 lead over Bayane at court No. 5. Both of those matches were suspended.

UCLA will be in action again at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on Saturday, hosting Stanford at 1:00 p.m.
