LOS ANGELES - The sixth-ranked UCLA Bruins (6-5) travel to face No. 5 Long Beach State (6-4) for the final road duel of the year on Tuesday, April 8. The bout will begin at 1:00 p.m. at the LBSU Sand Courts.
Long Beach State is coming off a 4-1 loss to No. 2 Pepperdine and a 5-0 win at Irvine Valley College and a 4-1 win over Arizona (at Irvine Valley). UCLA will run into a former Bruin, Bojana Todorovic, who teamed with Delainey Aigner-Swesey to pick up three wins last week, including the 49ers' only point over No. 2 Pepperinde. For Todorovic, the graduate student will be facing her former teammates, having transferred to Long Beach State for the 2014 sand season after completing her undergraduate work at UCLA.
The Bruins are 0-1 all-time vs. Long Beach State, falling 4-1 to the then second-ranked 49ers in Malibu, Calif., last year (April 10). The lone win came from Karsta Lowe and Todorovic as they defeated Libby Fontanilla and Delainey Aigner-Swesey (Todorovic's current partner) in straight sets (21-18, 21-19) at #3 doubles.
The Bruins will then finish off the weekend in their final tournament of the regular season, taking part in the 2014 Beach Collegiate Challenge, hosted by USA Volleyball at 1300 The Strand, Hermosa Beach, Calif. The tournament will take place on April 12-13 and will feature collegiate sand teams from No. 1 USC, No. 2 Pepperdine, No. 3 Hawai'i, No. 6 UCLA, Arizona, CSU Bakersfield, Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara.
The Bruins, under second year head coach Stein Metzger and assistants Jenny Johnson Jordan and Sarah Straton, are 9-12 overall in dual matches after going 3-7 last season. UCLA had a pair of teams reach the 2013 AVCA National Championships, Meg Norton and Kelly Reeves, as well as Nightingale and Becca Strehlow. Reeves became the first Bruin to earn AVCA All-America honors last year.
