The men's golf team won its first team title of the season.

University Park, WA -- The 14th-ranked UCLA men’s golf team captured its first tournament title of the season Tuesday, winning the Redhawk Invitational by three strokes at Chambers Bay.

The team victory represents the 28th career tournament title for Head Coach Derek Freeman and his 19th as UCLA’s coach. He’s won at least one team championship in each of his seven seasons as the Bruins’ coach.

The Bruins, led by junior Preston Valder and sophomores Jake Knapp and Jonathan Garrick, posted a final round team score of 279 (-5). Par at Chambers Bay was 70 for the first 36 holes and 71 in the final round. UCLA’s 54-hole total of 835 (-9) edged No. 17 Washington by three strokes. Arizona State finished third at 847 (+3), followed by fourth-place San Diego at 852 (+8) and fifth-place Pepperdine at 856 (+12).

Valder, who won the Cal State San Marcos Fall Classic earlier this season, notched the second-best result of his career, capturing third place with a three-round score of 206 (-5). On Tuesday, he fired a three-under par 68, the second-best score of the day. Knapp recorded his best finish of the season, posting a final round 69 (-2) and capturing fourth place at 207 (-4). Garrick vaulted 30 spots up the leader board with a 69 (-2) in the last round and tied for 29th at 218 (+7). Sophomore Lorens Chan tied for 16th at two-over par 213 with a 73 (+2) and senior Anton Arboleda placed 28th at 217 (+6) following his score of 73 (+2). Junior Jay Hwang, who played as an individual, tied with Chan after posting a 74 (+3).
