LOS ANGELES - Playing its final match of the regular season at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on Friday afternoon, the No. 2 UCLA women's tennis team took care of business against its cross-town rival, downing No. 12 USC, 4-1. The win keeps UCLA in contention for a share of this season's Pac-12 title, as a Stanford win over Cal on Saturday will give the three teams identical 9-1 records in league play with no matches remaining.

UCLA (21-2; 9-1 Pac-12) began Friday's match by cruising in doubles play, jumping out to solid leads at all three courts. Top-ranked Robin Anderson and Jennifer Brady started things off for the Bruins at court No. 1, easily defeating Brynn Boren and Giuliana Olmos, 8-3. At the time of Anderson and Brady's victory, UCLA was in control, owning a 6-2 advantage at court No. 2 and 4-2 lead at court No. 3. Things, however, got interesting when USC began to slowly chip away at both Bruin leads. Before long, USC (16-7; 7-3) evened things up when Gabriella DeSimone and Zoe Katz stormed back to take the match in a tiebreaker at court No. 3, downing Courtney Dolehide and Chanelle Van Nguyen, 8-7(5). Court No. 2 was also going in the Trojans' favor, as Kaitlyn Christian and Zoe Scandalis battled back from a 6-2 deficit against UCLA's eighth-ranked Catherine Harrison and Kyle McPhillips to eventually send that match to a tiebreaker. Fortunately for UCLA, Harrison and McPhillips were able to regroup in the breaker, taking it 7-5 to give UCLA a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.

Needing only three wins in singles to win the match, the Bruins got out to a solid start by taking four of six first sets. The Trojans, however, were able to quickly tie things up when Olmos downed Harrison, 6-3, 6-1 at court No. 5 to make the score 1-1.

Straight-set victories by McPhillips (court No. 3) and Anderson (court No. 1) put UCLA within a point of clinching the match. That point would come at court No. 2, where Brady was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Boren to make the final score 4-1 in favor of UCLA.

When play was suspended, Van Nguyen was trailing Christian, 3-6, 5-3 at court No. 4, and Kaitlin Ray was leading Katz, 6-3, 0-6, 1-0 at court No. 6.

If UCLA can grab a share of this year's Pac-12 title it will mark the first time since 2008 that the Bruins have won a conference championship.

Friday marked UCLA's third win over USC this season, as the Bruins also downed the Women of Troy 4-0 at February's USTA/ITA National Team Indoors and also posted a 5-2 win at USC on March 7.

Next up for UCLA is the Pac-12 Championships in Ojai, Calif. next week. For more information about the event visit www.ojaitourney.org.
