UCLA (21-3) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in Friday's contest following a pair of quick doubles wins at court Nos. 1 and 3. Joseph Di Giulio and Clay Thompson were first off at the No. 3 spot, as they downed Jayson Amos and Daniel Sardu, 8-5. Marcos Giron and Mackenzie McDonald then clinched the point at court No. 1, besting Robin Cambier and Kevin Farin, 8-6.
All attention then turned to court No. 1, where the third-ranked Giron was on the verge of clinching the win for UCLA. He did just that, downing the 78th-ranked Cambier, 6-3, 6-4 to send the Bruins into Saturday's final.
When play was suspended, Thompson was up a set and at 6-6 in the second set against Farin at court No. 2, while Di Giulio and McDonald had both dropped first sets at court Nos. 6 and 3, respectively.
Since the inception of the Pac-12 men's team tournament in 2012, UCLA and USC have met in the final every year. The Trojans claimed the first-ever championship in 2012, while UCLA took home the crown in 2013. Saturday will mark the fourth meeting between the two teams this year, with USC owning a 2-1 edge in the series.
