Stanford Defeats UCLA Baseball by a Score of 5-2
By: UCLA Athletics

The UCLA Baseball team dropped its series finale with Stanford on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Cardinal, 5-2, in front of 1,127 fans at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

A.J. Vanegas (2-2) earned the win for Stanford, tossing three innings of shutout relief. Sophomore Cody Poteet (3-3) took the loss for UCLA, giving up three runs on seven hits in six innings of work. Poteet walked one and struck out two. Logan James started the game for the Cardinal, getting a no-decision after pitching four innings and allowing one run on four hits while striking out four.

The Cardinal got on the board in the top of the first when Alex Blandino hit a two-out solo home run off of Poteet to give Stanford the early 1-0 advantage. The Bruins then threatened in the bottom of the third, getting runners on first and second with one out for senior Brian Carroll. However, Carroll grounded out and sophomore Ty Moore struck out on the next at-bat to end the inning.

Stanford then added a pair in the top of the fourth to add to its lead. After Austin Slater singled with one out, Dominic Jose stepped up two batters later and hit a double down the right field line to score Slater, making it 2-0, Cardinal. Zach Hoffpauir then singled up the middle on the next pitch to bring in Jose to give Stanford a three-run lead.

UCLA would cut into that lead in the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore Christoph Bono led off the frame with a double to right to bring up sophomore Trent Chatterton. Chatterton came through, knocking a 1-0 pitch down the right field line for a RBI single to get the Bruins on the board. UCLA looked to continue the rally as sophomore Justin Hazard got hit by a pitch on the next at-bat to put runners at first and second with nobody out. That would be all the Bruins would get though as a sacrifice bunt, a groundout and a strikeout ended the threat.

Stanford went on to tack on a run in the top of the seventh, when with the bases loaded and one out Blandino hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Hoffpauir and make it 4-1 in favor of the Cardinal. Hoffpauir then hit a two-out RBI single in the eighth off of freshman Nick Kern to make it 5-1. UCLA would not quit though, and in the bottom half of the eighth got one back to cut the lead to 5-2. After Moore led off with a triple, senior Kevin Williams brought him home with a single through the right side to cut the deficit to three. That would be all the Bruins would get though as they were unable to add any more runs in the game, giving Stanford a 5-2 victory.

Chatterton led UCLA at the plate with a 3-4 day that included a RBI while Bono went 2-4 with a run scored. Senior Aaron Weimer reached base safely in three of his four plate appearances, drawing two walks and logging a single.

UCLA (23-21-1, 10-11 Pac-12) will play its final home midweek game of the year this Tuesday as the Bruins welcome in Cal State Fullerton (23-20) for a 6 p.m. matchup out at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
