The UCLA Baseball team lost a close one on Tuesday night, falling to the Cal State Fullerton Titans, 1-0, at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Matt Chapman provided the only run of the game for the Titans with a solo home run in the top of the third.

Phil Bickford (4-3) picked up the win for the Titans, pitching 5.2 scoreless innings while surrendering four hits and striking out six. Freshman Grant Dyer (6-4) took the loss for the Bruins, allowing one run on seven hits in four innings of work. Dyer struck out two and walked two as well. Koby Gauna earned his fourth save of the year with 1.2 innings in relief.

After a scoreless first two innings, Chapman gave the Titans the lead by hitting an 0-1 pitch over the wall in left-center field for a solo home run in the top of the third. Cal State Fullerton threatened again in the top of the fourth, getting runners on first and second with one out. However, Dyer did well to recover, getting a fielder’s choice and a groundout to end the inning.

The Bruins looked for the tying run in the bottom of the fifth, starting when senior Pat Gallagher led off the frame with a single. Two batters later, senior Aaron Weimer drew a walk to put runners at first and second with one out. Freshman Brett Stephens popped up to third though on the next at-bat and sophomore Ty Moore fouled out to third to end the threat.

While the UCLA bullpen held the Titans scoreless for the next four innings to keep the deficit at one, the Bruin offense was unable to get anything going. In the bottom of the ninth, sophomore Justin Hazard hit a pinch-hit one-out single to put the tying run aboard, but a fly out and a groundout ended the inning and Cal State Fullerton went home with the 1-0 win.

Moore and Gallagher led UCLA with two hits apiece while sophomore Christoph Bono and Hazard provided the other hits for the Bruins.
