The UCLA Baseball team was defeated by the Oregon Ducks on Saturday night, dropping a 4-1 decision to Oregon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Jeff Gold (10-1) picked up the win for the Ducks, tossing six innings and allowing one run on seven hits while striking out two. Junior Grant Watson (4-9) took the loss for the Bruins, allowing four runs on eight hits in six innings pitched. Watson struck out nine and walked two as well. For the second night in a row, Jake Reed earned the save for Oregon with a scoreless ninth to post his 13th save of the year.

Oregon would be the ones to strike first, scoring a run in the top of the first off of Watson. With one out, Tyler Baumgartner tripled to the right-center gap and then came around to score on an infield single by Kyle Garlick, giving the Ducks an early 1-0 lead.

The Ducks then added two runs in the top of the third to give themselves a three-run lead. With one out and Desmond Santos on second, Aaron Payne hit a double to right-center to score Santos and make it 2-0, Oregon. Two batters later, Garlick brought home Payne with a double down the right-field line to increase the Oregon lead to three.

Gold continued to hold the UCLA offense scoreless and in the top of the fifth Oregon added another run off of Watson. Mark Karaviotis led off the inning with a double for the Ducks and two batters later came home to score on a single by Baumgartner to make it 4-0, Oregon. UCLA would get one back in the bottom of the sixth though, as junior Shane Zeile sent a solo home run over the fence in left to cut Oregon’s lead down to three.

The Bruins then threatened again in the bottom seventh as they looked for the tying runs. Freshman Luke Persico led off the inning with a single and two batters later senior Aaron Weimer drew a one-out walk, putting runners on the corners. Pinch-hitter Kort Peterson drew another walk to load the bases for sophomore Trent Chatterton, but Chatterton grounded into a double play to end the inning. UCLA could not score any runs in the eighth or ninth innings and the Bruins fell to the Ducks, 4-1.

Zeile and Moore both posted multi-hit games, logging two hits each. Zeile provided the only run of the game for UCLA with his home run in the sixth.

The Bruins (23-28-1, 10-16 Pac-12) and Ducks (39-16, 16-10 Pac-12) will finish their three-game set tomorrow afternoon at 12 p.m. out at Jackie Robinson Stadium in what will be UCLA’s final home game of the regular season. The game will be televised live by the Pac-12 Networks and the Bruins will honor their four graduating seniors before the game with a pregame ceremony.
