The UCLA Baseball team was defeated by Oregon at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Sunday afternoon by a score of, 5-4, in 11 innings, giving the Ducks a sweep of the Bruins.
Garrett Cleavinger (3-1) picked up the win for Oregon, pitching 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. Junior David Berg (3-2) took the loss for UCLA, allowing one run in four innings of relief.
Both starters earned no-decisions in the ballgame. Sophomore Cody Poteet started the game for the Bruins, tossing six innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits while striking out five. He walked one as well. Brando Tessar started the game for the Ducks, surrendering four runs on five hits and three walks in 2.1 innings pitched. Tessar struck out three.
The Bruins jumped out ahead in the bottom of the first with a run off of Tessar. With two outs and sophomore Ty Moore on first, junior Shane Zeile hit a triple down the right field line to bring around Moore and make it 1-0, UCLA. Moore was able to beat the throw home with a great slide at the plate on the play.
Oregon tied things up in the top of third starting when Desmond Santos led off the inning with a hit by pitch. Two sacrifice bunts later, he moved to third and came in to score when Tyler Baumgartner hit an infield single to second to even the game at 1-1. The game would not stay tied for long though as the Bruins scored three in the bottom half of the inning to take back the lead. With freshman Brett Stephens on second and sophomore Trent Chatterton on first with one out, Zeile stepped in and ripped a double to right-center, scoring Stephens to make it 2-1, UCLA. The next batter was sophomore Justin Hazard, who smacked a single through the right side to bring home Chatterton and Zeile to give the Bruins a three-run lead.
After a scoreless fourth, Oregon got a run back in the top of the fifth. Nick Catalano led off the inning with a double and eventually came home to score on a sacrifice fly by Mark Karaviotis, cutting UCLA’s lead down to 4-2. The Ducks then scored two runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game up at 4-4. Steven Packard led off the frame with a double to left-center and then moved to third when Catalano reached on an error by senior Aaron Weimer. The Bruins went to the bullpen after that, bringing in freshman Nick Kern. With pinch-hitter A.J. Balta at bat, Kern threw a wild pitch that allowed Packard to score to bring UCLA’s lead down to one. On the play, Catalano was able to move to third as Zeile’s throw home to the plate skipped away from Kern. The next batter was Karaviotis, who executed a safety squeeze to score Catalano and tie the game at 4-4.
Berg came into the game in the eighth inning, holding the Ducks scoreless for the next two frames. Stephen Nogosek did the same for Oregon and the game went to extra innings. In the bottom of the 10th, UCLA had an opportunity to end the game when it put runners on first and second with one out via a single by Chatterton and a walk by Moore. Zeile flew out on the next at-bat and Oregon brought in Cleavinger from the bullpen to face pinch-hitter Darrell Miller Jr. On a 1-2 count, Miller smacked a ball back up the middle that deflected off of Karaviotis’ glove at short. Oregon second baseman Aaron Payne was able to gather it for the Ducks and threw out pinch-runner Brett Urabe at the plate to keep the game tied.
Oregon then found the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th. Mitchell Tolman led off the inning with an infield single before moving to third on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout respectively. Catalano then stepped in and singled back up the middle off of Berg to give the Ducks the lead. UCLA was unable to score in the ninth and Oregon earned the sweep with a 5-4 victory.
Chatterton, Zeile and Persico all went 2-5 with Zeile logging two RBI and a run and Chatterton adding a run scored. Hazard recorded two RBI in the ballgame as well.
