UCLA is the only school with two players left in the men's draw. As the No. 2 seed, Giron is the highest seeded player left in the draw after top-seeded Clay Thompson of UCLA was beaten in Wednesday's opening round. Giron downed hometown favorite Nathan Pasha of Georgia, 7-6, 6-3 on Friday.
"I thought it was a really good match today," said Giron. "(Nathan) was playing well, and I played well, and I'm really happy with how I struck the ball today. I knew coming in that it was going to be a tough match because he's a heck of a player, so I'm really happy to come through in straight sets, especially with this heat."
Giron's win sets up a showdown with Cal's Ben McLachlan on Saturday. The two players met at No. 1 singles on April 4 at UCLA however their match was suspended once the Bruins clinched the win. Giron was leading 6-3, 3-6, 2-1 at the time of suspension.
McDonald also advanced to the quarterfinals, although he needed three sets to get past 9-16 seeded Nik Scholtz of Ole Miss, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. McDonald will next face 9-16 seeded Soren Hell-Olesen of Texas.
Following singles, Giron and McDonald were beaten in the round of 16 of doubles play, suffering a 6-1, 6-4 loss to second-seeded Mikelis Libietis and Hunter Reese of Tennessee.
In women's action, the Bruins dropped two of three matches on Friday with only Van Nguyen advancing. Van Nguyen, a 9-16 seed, downed Stanford's Carol Zhao, 7-5, 6-2. She will take on Duke's Ester Goldfeld in the quarterfinals. Van Nguyen is the last remaining UCLA player in the women's tournament, as second-seeded Robin Anderson and eighth-seeded Jennifer Brady both suffered round of 16 losses on Friday.
