Three Bruins Named to All-Pac-12 Team
By: UCLA Athletics

The UCLA Baseball team landed three players on the All-Pac-12 team today, as juniors Shane Zeile and David Berg and sophomore James Kaprielian were all named to the All-Conference squad.

Berg received All-Conference honors for the third year in a row, joining Garrett Atkins (1998-2000), Trevor Bauer (2009-11), Dennis Delany (1976-78) and Adam Plutko (2011-13) as the only UCLA players to earn All-Conference acclaim three times. Berg has enjoyed as fine a career as any reliever in the history of college baseball, making a school record 132 career appearances while recording a UCLA record 36 saves. He also owns the NCAA single-season record for saves with 24 in 2013 and tied the NCAA record for most appearances in a season with 51 last year. The 2013 Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year, Berg is the only pitcher in UCLA history to lead the conference in ERA in back-to-back seasons and this season led the Bruins with a 1.50 ERA and 11 saves in 31 relief appearances. In addition, he posted a 3-2 record with 35 strikeouts in 48 innings pitched.

Kaprielian served as UCLA's No. 1 starter in 2014, leading the Pac-12 and ranking 14th in the nation in strikeouts with 108. He also posted a 7-6 record with a 2.29 ERA, which is the seventh-lowest in the conference, and held opponents to a .201 batting average against him. Additionally, Kaprielian allowed two runs or less in 11 of his 15 starts this season and pitched at least seven innings in eight of those starts. He logged double-digit strikeouts five times this season and was particularly effective down the stretch, recording a 1.72 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 31.1 innings pitched in his last four starts.

Zeile started all 56 games for the Bruins, playing primarily as the team's starting catcher. He led the Bruins with a .324 batting average, never hitting below .300 at any point during the season. He also led the team with 28 RBI, a .421 slugging percentage, a .401 on-base percentage, 21 multi-hit games and 70 overall hits. His 70 hits are also tied for third-best in the Pac-12. Zeile, who is also a semifinalist for the Johnny Bench Award and a candidate for the Gregg Olson "Breakout Player of the Year" award, threw out a Pac-12 leading 18 attempted base stealers behind the plate as well.

Oregon State's Michael Conforto and Jace Fry won the Pac-12 Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year respectively while Washington's Lindsay Meggs was named the Coach of the Year. Stanford's Cal Quantrill took home Pac-12 Freshman of the Year honors while Washington's Erik Forgione was selected as the Defensive Player of the Year.
