The top-ranked UCLA men’s soccer team defeated No. 10 North Carolina, 1-0, on a goal from senior Leo Stolz before 3,939 at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Sunday evening.

UCLA (2-0) earned its second victory in three days after having defeated No. 11 Wake Forest, 3-1, on Friday in Winston Salem, N.C.

"We had a mature performance tonight," UCLA head coach Jorge Salcedo said. "The trip to North Carolina has helped us reveal where we are as a group. Three consecutive halves of shutouts and four goals on the road is a solid platform to build upon during the early phase while we continue to evolve our style of play."

The game's lone goal came at 30:48, as a long ball played to the top of the 18-yard box brought out UNC keeper Brendan Moore. Stolz found the ricocheted ball and sent a shot off the left post and into the net to give UCLA a 1-0 cushion.

Freshman Seyi Adekoya earned his first collegiate assist on the play. Stolz, the reigning Pac-12 Player of the Year, registered his 16th collegiate goal and his 12th in the last two seasons.

Senior keeper Earl Edwards played the entire 90 minutes in goal for UCLA. He recorded two saves, notching his first shutout of the season and the 12th of his career.

North Carolina (1-1) outshot the Bruins by a 10-7 margin, with each team recording five shots in the first half. UNC’s Omar Holness tallied five of the Tar Heels’ 10 shot attempts.

UCLA continues its road trip this week with a pair of games at the University of New Mexico’s Lobo Invitational. The Bruins will face American University on Friday, Sept. 5, at 3:30 p.m. (PT) before taking on New Mexico on Sunday, Sept. 7, at 5:00 p.m. (PT).
