Nick Rimando and Tony Beltran Help USMNT Win 2013 Gold Cup

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - UCLA alums Nick Rimando and Tony Beltran helped lead the U.S. Men’s National Team to its fifth CONCACAF Gold Cup over the weekend, as the U.S. defeated Panama, 1-0, in the final at Soldier Field in Chicago, Ill.

Rimando started at goalkeeper in five of the U.S.’s six matches in the tournament, going 5-0-0 with 12 saves and a clean sheet in the final vs. Panama. He never allowed more than one goal in any of his five matches and improved to 6-0-0 with two clean sheets for the U.S. in 2013. Overall, Rimando has earned 12 caps with the U.S. Men’s National Team in his career. At UCLA, he competed for three years (1997-99) and was a three-time All-MPSF selection, earning All-America honors in 1998. Rimando still ranks second all-time in GAA with a career mark of 0.67 and has the second-most victories in a single-season in UCLA history, earning 19 in 1999.

Beltran played in one match in the 2013 Gold Cup, starting and playing all 90 minutes at left back in the U.S.’s 4-1 win over Cuba in group play. It was his first full cap with the U.S. Men’s National Team and his third cap overall. Beltran played for two years at UCLA (2006-07), playing in 36 matches for the Bruins and earning first-team All-Pac-10 honors in 2007.

Both players play for Real Salt Lake of MLS and will take part in the MLS All-Star Game on July 31 at Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kans. at 6 pm PT. The U.S. Men’s National Team will return to action next in a friendly against Bosnia-Herzegovina on Aug. 14 at Asim Ferhatovic Hase Stadium in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina.
