Tempe, Ariz. - The seventh-ranked UCLA Baseball team lost the second game of its three-game set with Arizona State on Friday night, falling to the Sun Devils, 7-4, in front of 3,561 at Packard Stadium.

Ryan Kellogg picked up his sixth win of the season for Arizona State, pitching eight innings and allowing four earned runs on eight hits. Freshman Cody Poteet took the loss to move 1-2 on the year after allowing three runs in an inning of relief. Junior right-hander Nick Vander Tuig started the game for the Bruins and gave up four runs on five hits in five innings of work. Vander Tuig also struck out five and walked two.

After a scoreless first inning, UCLA got on the board first in the top of the second. Junior Pat Valaika singled to lead off the inning before junior Kevin Williams sacrificed him over to second, bringing up sophomore Shane Zeile. Zeile then laced a single to left to score Valaika to make it 1-0 Bruins.

The lead would be short lived though, as Arizona State scored four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Jake Peevyhouse led off with a double for the Sun Devils after hitting a fly ball to center that UCLA center fielder Brian Carroll lost in the lights. Two batters later, Nathaniel Causey doubled down the right field line to bring home Peevyhouse, tying the game at 1-1. Vander Tuig struck out the next hitter, but he walked Johnny Sewald to bring up Arizona State right fielder Casey Koffman with two runners on. Koffman would clear the bases with a three-run home run to right off of Vander Tuig, giving the Sun Devils a 4-1 advantage.

The Bruins got one back in the top of the fifth when Zeile smashed a solo homer to left off of Kellogg, cutting Arizona State's lead to 4-2. UCLA struck again in the top of the sixth, when sophomore Kevin Kramer and Valaika hit back-to-back doubles with two outs to cut the deficit to 4-3. Valaika nearly tied the game up with his double, as the ball hit the top of the left field wall, falling just a few inches short of a home run. It would not matter though, as Williams hit a clutch single to center in the next at-bat to score Valaika and even the game at 4-4.

For the second time in the game, the Sun Devils took the lead right back in the bottom of the inning, getting three runs across in their half of the sixth. Poteet came in to relieve Vander Tuig and allowed back-to-back singles to start the inning. Dalton DiNatale then came to the plate for Arizona State and hit a fly ball to right that looked to be an easy sacrifice fly. Sophomore Eric Filia caught the ball and made a terrific throw to the plate, but Arizona State shortstop Drew Stankiewicz slid around Zeile's tag to give the lead back to the Sun Devils. Two batters later, Coffman came to the plate and hit another home run to right to bring the lead up to 7-4 in Arizona State's favor.

The Bruins were held scoreless for the remaining three innings and Arizona State went on to claim the 7-4 victory over UCLA.

Zeile led the Bruins at the plate, going 2-4 with a home run and two RBI. Valaika also put together a multi-hit night, recording two hits in four at-bats while also scoring two runs. On the mound, freshman James Kaprielian made his first appearance since Feb. 24 at Baylor, throwing two innings of scoreless relief while striking out five of the nine batters he faced.

The Bruins (17-6, 5-3 Pac-12) and Sun Devils (15-7-1, 4-4 Pac-12) will conclude their series tomorrow afternoon at 12:30 p.m. Sophomore left-hander Grant Watson (5-0, 1.13 ERA) will start the series finale for UCLA.

Game Notes: This marks the first time all year that UCLA has dropped back-to-back games...Shane Zeile's home run was the first of his collegiate career...Brian Carroll extended his streak of reaching base safely to 21 consecutive games...with his stolen base in the third inning, Carroll has also now stolen 13 bases in his last 14 attempts...James Kaprielian has now struck out 12 of the 22 batters he has faced this season...Pat Valaika recorded his 10th multi-hit game of the year.
