HONOLULU - UCLA snapped a three-match losing streak against Hawai'i on Sunday night, downing the host Wahine 3-0 in the championship match of the 14th annual Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic. Game scores were 30-25, 30-25, 30-24, as the Bruins improve to 3-0 on the season. Hawai'i falls to 2-3 with the loss.
The Bruins and Wahine traded sideouts for the majority of the match as just 17 of the 55 points in the game would have scored under the previous sideout format. The Bruins prevailed with a 30-25 win, hitting .307 to Hawaii's .220, helped along by Kristee Porter's seven kills and three block assists.
Porter continued her hot hitting in the second game, racking up 10 more kills en route to another 30-25 game win for the Bruins, and recorded her 24th and 25th kills of the match in game three, giving her 2,001 kills for her Bruin career.
Senior setter Erika Selsor also surpassed a milestone during Sunday's match, notching her 5,000th career kill during the match. The Bruins wrapped up the match and the tournament title with a 30-24 win in the third and final game of the match. UCLA hit .297 as a team as compared to Hawaii's .214. Porter led all players with her 25 kills, connecting at an impressive .404 rate with 47 swings and just six errors. She also double-doubled, recording 14 digs in the match.
"We took the intensity up tonight," said head coach Andy Banachowski. "As we played through the match we gained more confidence an we got our block working. We're maturing as a team, and we have three seniors that were hungry for a win tonight."
Three Bruins were named to the All-Tournament team, including junior Lauren Fendrick an seniors Ashley Bowles and Porter. Bowles became a four-time All-Tournament Team selection at the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic, while Porter was named the tournament MVP for the second consecutive season.
The Bruins return to action next Friday, September 7, against Notre Dame at the US Bank/Arby's Classic in Lincoln, NE. Match time is scheduled for 4:30 pm CT.
