Final Stats

WESTWOOD - Senior outside hitter Ashley Bowles played a huge match for the Bruins on Friday night, as UCLA just came up short against cross-town rival USC at Pauley Pavilion, falling to the Women of Troy 3-2. Game scores were 25-30, 28-30, 30-21, 30-22, 15-11. With the loss, the Bruins fall to 10-4 (5-3 Pac-10), while USC improves to 13-1, 8-0 Pac-10.

Bowles posted a very impressive performance in Friday night's match. Statisticaly, she led the Bruins with 21 kills, two service aces and 17 digs to go along with two solo blocks and a block assist. Throughout the match, Bowles' serving kept the Women of Troy off-balance, leading to victories in the otherwise statistically even first two games.

Junior outside hitter Lauren Fendrick also made important contributions for the Bruins, downing 20 kills and seven digs along with a block assist. Freshman Heather Cullen, making her first collegiate start, was also in double figures for the Bruins, recording 10 kills and 13 digs along with four block assists on the evening.

UCLA opened the match with a 4-0 run, and held the lead throughout the game. The two teams posted nearly identical statistics. USC had 14 kills to UCLA's 13, the Women of Troy had nine errors to UCLA's eight, both teams had 45 attacks and an identical .111 attack percentage and an identical 20 digs. The Bruins did hold the lead in three categories, as they out-aced USC 2-1, had fewer service errors (one for UCLA, five for USC), and the Bruins had four team blocks to USC's two.

Game two was closely fought throughout, as the teams were tied as late as 28-28, and neither team held a lead greater than two points at any time in the game. UCLA prevailed 30-28, and went to the locker rooms with a 2-0 lead.

The third game of the match started much like game two, but the Women of Troy slowly build a lead, going up 23-15. UCLA was able to close the gap a bit, but would lose 30-21, and would then lose game four 30-22.

The fifth and deciding game was decided on the service of USC's Katie Olsovsky, who served five straight points to turn a 3-3 tie into an 8-3 Trojan lead when the teams switched sides. UCLA was able to close to within 14-10 before the match was decided with a 15-11 USC victory.

UCLA played this match without 2000 All-American Kristee Porter, who has been declared ineligible by UCLA pending a decision from the NCAA regarding possible "extra benefits."

The Bruins return to action on Thursday night, Oct. 25, with a 7 pm first serve at Arizona State before traveling to Tucson for a Friday evening matchup with Arizona at the McKale Center.
