LOS ANGELES - On senior night in Pauley Pavilion, the No. 12 UCLA women's volleyball team posted a 30-18, 30-25, 30-22 sweep of Oregon State, improving to 17-7, 11-5 Pac-10. The Bruins were led by senior Ashley Bowles, who downed 15 kills on 30 attacks, while fellow senior Erika Selsor pulled to within 19 assists of reaching 6,000 for her Bruin career.
UCLA and Oregon State battled early in the game, with the score tied at 9-9 before the Bruins went on a six-point run behind the service of Selsor. From there, it was all Bruins, as Oregon State was only able to score consecutive points twice more as UCLA closed out the 30-18 win.
The Beavers built early leads in game two, including five-point margins at 11-6 and 17-12. The Bruins would come back to tie the score at 20, 21, 22, before taking the lead for good at 23-22 en route to the 30-25 win. Game three was tied as late as 17-17, with neither team taking more than a two-point lead to that point. From there, the Bruins posted five straight points behind the service of freshman defensive specialist Chrissie Zartman, and the Bruins won game three 30-22 to complete the sweep.
Bowles led the Bruins with 15 kills, and was joined in double figures by Lauren Fendrick, who had 12. Zartman was the only Bruin with double-figure digs, checking in with 11, while freshman Brynn Murphy led UCLA with four block assists, participating in four of the team's five team blocks on the evening.
UCLA returns to action on Monday evening in Corvallis, OR, with a 7 pm match against the Beavers before traveling to Oregon for a Tuesday evening match in Eugene. These matches are rescheduled from Sept. 13 and 14, respectively, and will complete UCLA's 2001 regular season schedule.
