Final Stats

LOS ANGELES - The UCLA women's volleyball team remained undefeated all-time against California on Friday night in Pauley Pavilion, defeating the Golden Bears in three games. Game scores were 30-26, 30-20. 25-30, 30-22. With the win, the Bruins improve to 21-6, 12-5 Pac-10, while the Golden Bears fall to 19-5 (10-5 Pac-10).

UCLA went out to an early 4-1 lead in game one, as senior Natalie Ray started her first-ever match for the Bruins. Ray was in the starting lineup as Cal served to begin the match. Because of recent surgery on her right shoulder, Ray stood off of the playing surface during the opening rally, which ended with a kill by UCLA's other senior, Cira Wright. Ray then successfully served the second rally of the match before being replaced by libero Chrissie Zartman and then Brittany Ringel.

UCLA held its lead throughout the first game, winning 30-26. Brynn Murphy had a team-high five kills in the opening game of the match as the Bruins hit .224 as a team while Cal hit .085 in the game.

Game two saw the Golden Bears take an early 2-0 lead before UCLA came back with a four-point rally and took a 4-2 lead it would never relinquish. UCLA led by as many as nine points at 27-18, and went to the locker rooms up two games to none with the 30-20 second game victory. Cira Wright had the hot hand for the Bruins, as she hit .556 in the game with five kills on an error-free nine attacks. Murphy also had five kills in the game.

Cal came out of the locker rooms for game three and took an early 2-0 lead. The Bruins would fight back and take the lead at 10-9, but a four-point Cal rally gave the Golden Bears a 13-11 lead, prompting UCLA head coach Andy Banachowski to spend a timeout. UCLA came back with a four-point rally of its own for a 16-15 lead, but Cal rebounded and held the lead for the remainder of the game, winning 30-25. Brittany Ringel and Heather Cullen each had a team-high five kills in the game for UCLA.

Game four was a game of scoring streaks. The Bruins took an early 15-7 lead, thanks in part to a four-point scoring run behind the service of Laura Kroneberger. With UCLA leading 18-11, Cal started an impressive scoring streak with seven straight points to tie the game at 18-all. During that run, Banachowski called his second time out of the game and made two substitutions in an attempt to prevent the Golden Bears from taking the lead. A Nancy Barba kill stopped the Cal scoring run and gave the Bruins a 19-18 lead, and UCLA would never look back, winning the game 30-22. Murphy led the Bruins in the game with a team-high seven kills.

For the match, UCLA was led by Brynn Murphy, who had a match-high 21 kills along with two block assists for 22 points. Senior Cira Wright turned in 13 kills and 18 digs on the evening with a block assist for 13.5 points. Brittany Ringel also had double-figure kills with 15, and had three of UCLA's four service aces for an 18-point evening. Chrissie Zartman led all players with 19 digs in the match.

UCLA returns to action next Friday night, November 21, with a 7 pm match at top-ranked USC.
