Ninth-Ranked Bruins Trounce #19 Arizona

Nov. 27, 2009

Box Score

LOS ANGELES - Five different Bruins had at least seven kills, led by the nine from senior Kaitlin Sather and freshman Mari Hole, as the ninth-ranked Bruins swept #19 Arizona on Friday at Pauley Pavilion. Scores were 25-13, 25-13, 25-17.

The Bruins improve to 22-8 overall and 12-5 in Pac-10 play, while the Wildcats fall to 19-9 and 8-9 in league action.

Sather fell one kill shy of a double-double, as she added 10 digs. Sophomore Lainey Gera was also in double figures in digs with 16. Hole hit .500 with only one error in 16 swings, while junior Dicey McGraw was perfect with eight kills and no miscues in 18 attempts for a .444 hitting percentage.

The Bruins never trailed in the first set. UCLA recorded the first two points on a kill by sophomore Katie Camp and an ace by Gera, but Arizona came back with three of the next four to even the score at three. However, the Bruins responded with three in a row and five of the next six to go up 8-4. An Arizona attack error and back-to-back kills by Hole and sophomore Amanda Gil made it 6-3, and following a Wildcat sideout, another kill by Hole and a Camp/Sather combo block made it a four-point advantage.

Arizona sided out the next point to make it 8-5, but UCLA got the next five to forge ahead 13-5. After two Wildcat attack errors, the Bruins got consecutive kills by freshman Lauren Cook, Hole and Sather to go up by eight. UCLA got its lead up to double figures for the first time at 20-10 after a 4-0 run. Gil began the spurt with a kill, Sather had back-to-back spikes and a Gil/Sather combo block made it a 10-point lead. The Bruins notched the last three points of the set on a kill by Hole, an Arizona attack error and a spike by McGraw to win it 25-13. Sather had five kills to pace the Bruins in the opener, while Hole added four. UCLA had only one error in the first and hit .350 to Arizona's .071.

It was another wire-to-wire victory in the second for the Bruins, as they scored five of the first six points. Even at one, UCLA netted four straight on a kill by Gil, an Arizona attack error, a Sather spike and a solo block by McGraw to make it 5-1. Following a Wildcat sideout, the Bruins got the next four to go ahead 9-2. Cook and Hole had kills and two Arizona errors made it a seven-point lead.

The Wildcats closed the gap to five, but could get no closer. Leading 17-11, the Bruins scored five of six to reach a double-figure lead for the first time in the second set at 22-12. Gil had two kills during the 5-1 run, Sather had one and Arizona committed two attack errors. The Wildcats sided out the next point, but the Bruins recorded the last three of the set on kills by Camp and Hole and a Sather ace to win it 25-13. Hole posted five kills in the second to lead UCLA, while Gil added three. The Bruins out-hit the Wildcats .400 to .036.

Arizona got its first lead of the match to open the third set, but one would be its biggest advantage. Down 3-2, UCLA scored three straight on a kill by McGraw and back-to-back spikes by freshman Bojana Todorovic to go up 5-3. The Bruins didn't trail for the rest of the set. Up 6-5, the Bruins scored five of six to extend their advantage to five at 11-6. Todorovic had three of the points on kills, while Sather also had one. The Wildcats closed to within three at 13-10, but four straight by UCLA on kills by Sather, Todorovic and Gil and a UA attack error put the Bruins up 17-10.

The Wildcats forced the Bruins into their first timeout of the match late in the set. Down 21-13, Arizona scored four straight to make it 21-17. But the Bruins responded with the final four on back-to-back kills by Camp and freshman Rachael Kidder, a combo block by Camp and Kidder and an Arizona attack error to win it 25-17. Todorovic had all seven of her kills for the match in the third, while McGraw posted three. The Bruins out-hit the Wildcats .366 to .189.

Tiffany Owens led the Wildcats with a match-high 16 kills and 16 digs. Arizona hit .103 as a team.

The Bruins finish up their regular season on Saturday at Pauley Pavilion against Arizona State at 3 p.m. Sather and Emily Clements will be honored in a pre-match ceremony. Gametracker and free audio and video will be available at UCLABruins.com.
