Seventh-Ranked Bruins Ace Their Exam With Sweep at California

BERKELEY, Calif. - The seventh-ranked Bruins had a season-high 10 aces, including a career-high four by junior Mariana Aquino and two apiece from juniors Meg Norton and Kelly Reeves, as UCLA swept California on Sunday at Haas Pavilion. Set scores were 25-18, 25-21, 25-18.

The Bruins improve to 13-4 overall and 5-3 in Pac-12 play, while the Golden Bears fall to 9-9 and 3-5 in league action.

Senior Tabi Love led the Bruins with 16 kills to go with a career-best seven digs. Senior Rachael Kidder was also in double figures in kills with 11. To go with their two aces, Reeves added seven kills and six digs, while Norton posted nine digs. Sophomore Zoë Nightingale recorded six kills and six blocks, senior Bojana Todorovic tallied 14 digs and sophomore Megan Moenoa had 24 assists and seven digs. The Bruins hit .303 for the match.

Cal scored the first point of the match, but UCLA came back with five of the next six on two kills by Love, a Reeves kill, an Aquino ace and a Love/Nightingale combo block to take a 5-2 lead. The Golden Bears got to within one on three occasions, but could not equal things. With the score 11-10, the Bruins reeled off runs of 5-1 and 8-2 to take a set-best lead of seven. The 5-1 run consisted of three kills by Love, another Aquino ace and a Cal attack error to make it 16-11.

After a Cal sideout, a combo roof from Moenoa and Nightingale, a Love ace and a Kidder kill put the Bruins up 19-12. California got to within four at 21-17, but the Bruins scored four of the last five on kills by Love and Reeves, a Golden Bear service error and Aquino's third ace of the set on UCLA's first set point to win it 25-18. Love was 8-for-15 in kills in the opener with no errors, while Kidder and Reeves each added three kills. The Bruins had 16 kills and only one error in 29 attempts for a .517 hitting percentage to California's .364.

The Bruins jumped out to an early 7-4 lead in the second, but the Golden Bears scored the next three to equal the score at seven. Kills by Love and Aquino and a Kidder block put the Bruins back up by three. After a Cal sideout, another Aquino kill and an ace by Norton made it 12-8. Following another Golden Bear sideout, a Reeves kill and Aquino's fourth ace of the match put the Bruins up by a set-best five at 14-9.

A 4-0 run for Cal cut its deficit to one at 14-13, but the Bruins countered with their own 4-0 run on kills by Reeves and Love, a Golden Bear attack error and a Reeves ace to make it 18-13. The Golden Bears had another 4-0 run in them to get to within one at 18-17, but could not get the score even. Leading 23-21, kills by Aquino and Love clinched a 25-21 victory. Love paced UCLA in the second with five kills, while Aquino added four. Despite UCLA winning the set, Cal held the hitting edge .135 to .118.

California ran out to an early 10-4 lead in the third set, but UCLA slowly chipped away to finish the sweep. Trailing 13-9, the Bruins scored four straight on a Love kill, a Love/Nightingale combo block, a Todorovic ace and a Nightingale kill to even things at 13. California sided out, but UCLA countered with runs of 5-0 and 7-1 to take a 20-15 advantage. Nightingale was a part of four points during the 7-1 run on two kills and two combo blocks with Love and freshman Becca Strehlow. Kills by Kidder and Love, and a Reeves ace, rounded out the run.

Leading 21-18, the Bruins scored the final four points of the match on a combo roof from Strehlow and freshman Hannah Boland and three straight Kidder kills to take the third 25-18. Kidder led UCLA with seven kills, while Love and Nightingale added three apiece. Todorovic tallied six digs, as the Bruins out-hit the Bears .306 to .235.
