UCLA Notes (NCAA Men's Tennis Final)
#1 UCLA vs. #2 Virginia
May 21, 2013 - Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex (Urbana, Ill.)

* UCLA ranks third all-time in NCAA men's tennis titles with 16, trailing only USC (20) and Stanford (17).

* UCLA leads the nation in NCAA Team Championships with 108. The last Bruin team to win an NCAA title was women's volleyball in 2011. The Bruins are gunning for their first men's NCAA title since golf won the championship in 2008.

* UCLA is making its 12th appearance in the NCAA Final since the team format was adopted in 1977. The Bruins' last appearance in the NCAA Final was during the team's NCAA Championship season of 2005 (UCLA def. Baylor, 4-3 in championship match).

* Head coach Billy Martin, who is in his 20th season as head coach at UCLA, takes an overall record of 456-91 (.834) into Tuesday's national championship match. Martin is a native of Illinois, growing up in the Chicago area.

* Ohio State, which the Bruins beat 4-3 in Monday's semifinals, was the only team to take a point off of UCLA in this year's NCAA Championships, as the Bruins won their first four matches by 4-0 scores (UMKC - Rd. 1, Drake - Rd. 2, Vanderbilt - Rd. of 16 and Duke - Quarterfinals).

* UCLA owns a 2-4 all-time record against Virginia, with two of those meetings coming in the NCAA Championships. The Bruins beat the Cavaliers, 4-1 in the NCAA Quarterfinals in 2005, as UCLA would go on to win the NCAA title that year by beating Baylor, 4-3 in the final (@ Texas A&M). More recently, Virginia beat UCLA, 4-2 in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships in 2010 (@Athens). That was the last meeting between the two schools.

* UCLA's No. 5 singles player, Clay Thompson, takes a 14-match winning streak into today's match. Thompson, who is 24-3 on the year, has not lost since falling to Tulsa's Carlos Bautista in a dual match back on March 14.

* Sophomore Marcos Giron, who clinched the team's 4-3 win over Ohio State on Monday, also clinched a huge win for UCLA earlier this year, as he beat USC's Emilio Gomez, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(3) in a dual match on Feb. 22 at USC to give UCLA the 4-3 win. He owns the most singles wins on the team with 32 (only 30-match winner on the team). He also owns the most wins over ranked opponents with 14.

* The No. 5 singles position has been a key spot for the Bruins this year, as the team has only lost one match there (26-1). Five different players have seen time at that position, with the most appearances by Clay Thompson, who has gone 17-1.

* UCLA takes a 29-1 overall record into the NCAA Final, marking the most wins by a Bruin team since 1986 (UCLA was 29-2 that year). Regardless of the outcome of Tuesday's match, the Bruins will finish with the fewest losses since 1996 (UCLA finished 27-1 that year).

* UCLA has lost the doubles point on six occasions this season, coming back to win every match (vs. Georgia, Baylor, Stanford, Pepperdine and USC twice). The Bruins actually won the doubles point in their lone loss of the season to USC on Feb. 17.
