UCLA Downs BYU and TCU at Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invite

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA track and field team ran past BYU and TCU at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational, Saturday at Drake Stadium. The Bruin men earned wins over the Horned Frogs, 85-55 and the Cougars, 95-66, while the women downed TCU, 115-32 and BYU, 112-46.

The meet had numerous highlights but All-American Kylie Price carried the load as she won four events on Saturday. Price opened the meet with a win in the long jump, surpassing the 21-foot mark for the first time on the outdoor season with a mark of 21-1.25. She then ran the second leg of the 4x100m relay that won with a time of 45.00.

In the open races, Price scorched the straightaway with an 11.56 in the 100m and closed out her day with a 23.90 in the 200m.

Also on the women’s side, Meghan Marvin, in her first career steeple race etched her name as 10th in the UCLA record books with a winning time of 10:57.90. Moving up from 10th to ninth all-time at UCLA was Jaycee Olsen in the hammer throw when she unleashed a personal best mark of 166-7.

In the 100m hurdles, the Bruins took 1-2 when Trinity Wilson continued her strong spring with a time of 13.45, just ahead of second place Brea Buchanan’s time of 13.46.

In the high jump, UCLA also took 1-2, as Zibby Boyer won the event with a personal best clearance of 5-9.75. Boyer earned the win on misses as Caroline Gyllenbern also cleared 5-9.75.

The Bruins swept the pole vault as Natasha Kolbo and Elena Clarke both cleared 13-4.25, with Kolbo earning the win. Renee Greene finished third with a clearance of 12-6.

In the javelin the Bruins took it even further as they seized the top five spots. Zaybree Haury earned another win in the event with a throw of 137-9. Victoria Breidenthal placed second with a mark of 126-10 while Monique Van was third with a 122-4.

Other winners for the Bruins included Kelsey Smith in the 1,500m with a time of 4:23.49, Elle Sanders in the 800m with a time of 2:10.57 and Aliya Shirif in the 3,000m with a 9:56.79.

On the men’s side the Bruins earned key points in the discus where they went 1-2-3 in the event. Julian Wruck once again led the way with a 203-5. Matthew Kosecki followed with a 185-5 and Nicholas Scarvelis was third with a mark of 177.4.

Scarvelis earlier won the shot put with a mark of 62-8 while Wruck was fourth at 54-2. In the 1,500m, UCLA took the top four spots with Nick Hartle leading the way with a personal best time of 3:45.25.

In the pole vault the Bruins finished 1-2 with Mike Woepse taking top honors with a clearance of 17-4.50. Mark Sakioka cleared a season best 16-4.75.

The Bruins swept the 3,000m, led by Nathaniel Cushing-Murray’s 8:31.50 while in his first ever steeple race, Nohe Lema won with a time of 9:02.37. UCLA took first and third in the javelin as Cody Danielson won the event with a throw of 203-5. Marcus Nilsson was third with a mark of 173-8.

Women

Sharon Day – Was second overall in long jump (19-7, 5.97, 0.3w); best overall javelin throw (141-2, 43.02); fourth-best overall time in 100mH (13.88, -0.3w).  

HJ – Brigetta Barrett, first overall, 6-2 (1.88), new meet record.

Shannon Murakami – Former Bruin,  best overall time in 1500m (3:09.361); best overall mark in 3000m (9:27.17).

4X400m – Best overall time by Track Master B, 3:32.13 – Kori Carter, Allyson Felix, former Bruin Turquoise Thompson, Carol Rodriguez.

Men

1,500m - Running unattached, distance ace Daniel Herrera ran a personal best 3:42.13 to win the event against a talented field. 

Hammer Throw – Alex Umstead, PR, 210-01 (64.03), best overall mark

Long Jump – Jeff Henderson, 26-5 (8.05/0.2w), new meet record, best overall mark. Also had a 26-8.25 (8.13/2.3w) wind-aided.  

1500m –Bruin senior Daniel Herrera, best time of 3:42.13, meet record, tied for No. 9 all-time

PV – Best overall mark by Bruin alum Yoo Kim, 17-8.50 (5.40), who is already the meet record holder.
