LOS ANGELES – UCLA track and field signee Steele Wasik was named the Ohio Boys Gatorade Track and Field Athlete of the Year, the company announced. Wasik is a decathlete from St. Edward High School in Lakewood, Ohio.
Wasik, one of the top prep multi-event talents in the country, garnered the accolades on the strength of his hurdling. The 6-foot-5 senior won the 300m hurdles at the Ohio division I state meet in a time of 36.31. That time was the No. 3 performance in the country at the time.
He also captured silver in the 110m hurdles with a time of 13.94 and placed fifth in the long jump with a leap of 22-8. He has also cleared 6-6 in the high jump during his senior season.
Wasik showed his skills in the multi-events by winning the 2013 national AAU Junior Olympic Games in the decathlon and then earned bronze in the pentathlon at the 2014 New Balance National indoor championships.
