Junior right-hander James Kaprielian and incoming freshman Sean Bouchard have headlined a group of UCLA ballplayers that have thrived in various amateur summer leagues from around the country. Other UCLA players who have had strong summers are junior infielder Trent Chatterton, junior outfielder Ty Moore, sophomore infielder Luke Persico, sophomore pitcher Moises Ceja and incoming freshman pitchers Griffin Canning and Matt Trask.

Kaprielian has excelled while pitching for the U.S. Collegiate National Team, winning both of his starts while posting an ERA of 1.00 in nine innings. The Tustin, Calif. native has also struck out 14 batters while walking just one. In his last start against Chinese Taipei, Kaprielian was dominant, striking out 12 hitters in six innings while facing just one batter above the minimum. Kaprielian is the eighth UCLA selection to the Collegiate National Team in the last six years and the ninth selection under head coach John Savage.

Bouchard, an infielder from San Diego, Calif., leads the Walla Walla Sweets of the West Coast League with a .358 batting average. He has scored nine runs in 16 games for the Sweets, logging two doubles, a triple and 11 RBI as well.

Chatterton is batting .282 with 12 runs, four doubles, one home run and nine RBI in 20 games for the Duluth Huskies of the Northwoods League. This past season for the Bruins, Chatterton hit .291 with 21 runs, nine doubles and 17 RBI while leading UCLA in conference play with a .327 batting average.

Persico is off to a blistering start in the Northwoods League, hitting .377 in 14 games for the La Crosse Loggers, good for the second-highest average on the team. The sophomore infielder from Stevenson Ranch, Calif. has also recorded 11 runs, two home runs and 14 RBI for the Loggers. During his freshman season in Westwood in 2014, Persico started 54 of UCLA's 56 games, hitting .246 with five triples and 15 RBI.

Moore, who will enter his third season at UCLA in 2015, is currently batting .282 with a team-leading five doubles for the Chatham Anglers of the prestigious Cape Cod League. Moore has also collected 11 runs, a triple, two home runs, 15 RBI and three stolen bases for the Anglers. At UCLA, he batted .294 during his sophomore season, leading the Bruins with 28 runs scored and 14 doubles.

Ceja has pitched well in relief for the Bellingham Bells of the West Coast League, allowing just one run in six appearances (eight innings pitched). He has also struck out five batters and has posted a 1-0 record for the Bells. Incoming freshman Matt Trask has also pitched well in relief, not allowing a run in 6.1 innings pitched for the Yakima Valley Pippins of the West Coast League. Trask, a right-hander from Davis, Calif., has struck out eight batters in his 6.1 innings pitched and like Ceja has logged a record of 1-0 thus far.

Finally, right-hander Griffin Canning (Santa Margarita, Calif.) has been a solid starter for the Wenatchee AppleSox of the West Coast League, posting a 2.20 ERA in four appearances (three starts) for the ballclub. In 16.1 innings pitched, Canning is 1-1 with 17 strikeouts.  He will enter the 2015 season as a freshman for the Bruins.

One other Bruin, junior Justin Hazard, is now playing for the Valley Blue Sox of the New England Collegiate League. He is off to a strong start as well, batting .357 for the Blue Sox thus far.
