The 13th-ranked UCLA men’s golf team is set to host the Gifford Collegiate Championship for the ninth straight year. This year’s tournament will be held at the North Course of the Pelican Hill Resort in Newport Beach, CA, Nov. 4-5.

A field of 10 teams, including local favorites UCLA and USC highlight the 2013 event. Consensus No. 1 ranked Alabama, along with No. 6 Washington are also among the featured teams. Also competing are teams from Coastal Carolina, Lamar University, Oregon, Northwestern, Southern Methodist and Tennessee.

Four-time Gifford Collegiate winner UCLA is the defending champion this year. The Bruins won all their previous Gifford Collegiate titles at the CordeValle Country Club in San Martin. USC won Gifford Collegiate titles in 2008 and ’11.

Alabama’s Trey Mullinax, ranked third nationally, is the highest ranked player in the 2013 field. Also ranked among the Top 50 players are No. 10 Cheng-Tsung Pan of Washington, Preston Valder and Lorens Chan of UCLA, ranked 14th and 28th, respectively, and Alabama’s Robby Shelton, ranked 46th.

UCLA Head Coach Derek Freeman, who has guided the Bruins to a pair of Gifford Collegiate titles in six previous seasons, has announced the following lineup: senior Anton Arboleda, juniors Matt Pinizzotto and Valder, and sophomores Jonathan Garrick and Chan.

The Gifford Collegiate Championship is a 54-hole tournament, and tee times begin at 7 a.m. each day. On Mon., Nov. 4, the teams will play 36 holes. The North Course will play to a par of 70 over 6,985 yards. Scoring will be provided by GolfStat and admission is free to the public.
