Bruins Begin Main Draw Play in Tulsa

Tulsa, Okla. - UCLA began play in the main draw at the ITA Men's All-American Championships on Thursday at the University of Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

Unfortunately for the Bruins, only Marcos Giron was able to reach the second round. Giron, who was seeded fifth, began the day with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Lloyd Glasspool of Texas in the opening round. He was then upset in the second round by Virginia Tech's Amerigo Contini, 6-4, 6-2.

The Bruins' other three singles players in the main draw all fell in three sets in the first round. Dennis Mkrtchian put up a strong effort against top-seeded Mikelis Libietis of Tennessee, eventually falling 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Mackenzie McDonald lost to 12th-seeded Mitchell Frank of Virginia, 6-7(1), 6-1, 6-2, while Clay Thompson was downed by Oklahoma's Axel Alvarez, 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-1.

Mkrtchian, Thompson and McDonald all played matches in the back draw on Thursday.

Giron and McDonald were scheduled to play their opening round doubles match in the main draw on Thursday evening.

2013 Aztec Invitational
Several Bruin players will be competing in San Diego this weekend, as San Diego State plays host to the 2013 Aztec Invitational. Bruin freshman Joseph Di Giulio is the No. 1 seed in the Flight-A singles draw. Ryoto Tachi is seeded No. 2 in that draw. Brendan Wee will be competing in the Flight-B singles draw, and Michael Guzman is in the Flight-C draw. Di Giulio and Tachi are seeded No. 4 in the doubles event.
