Four Bruins Earn Pac-12 Postgraduate Scholarships
By: UCLA Athletics

UCLA's Rachel Godfred (swimming and diving), Alec Govi (cross country/track & field), Matt Wiet (men's soccer) and Mariah Williams (women's basketball) have been named recipients of Pac-12 Postgraduate Scholarships for 2012-13.

Each scholarship of $3,000 goes to student-athletes with a minimum 3.0 GPA who have also demonstrated a commitment to continuing education, campus and community involvement, and leadership. Since the program began in 1999, the Pac-12 has awarded over $1.5 million for postgraduate study.

Godfred was named Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention for the 2012-2013 season, earning the award for the second-straight year. A freestyle and butterfly specialist, Godfred earned points for the Bruins at the Pac-12 Championships in the 1650 Free and made the medal stand with an eighth-place finish in the 800 Free Relay at the AT&T Winter Nationals.

Govi earned Pac-12 All-Academic honors twice during his career and was a Top 60 finisher at the 2011 Pac-12 Cross Country Championships. Govi earned the 2013 Athletic Director's Academic Excellence Award for making the Director's Honor Roll (3.0 or higher GPA) every quarter at UCLA, and he was also named to UCLA's All-Academic Team for men's track & field for the second time in his career.

Wiet was a three-time NSCAA All-Far West Region honoree and two-time All-Pac-12 selection in his three years in Westwood. In 2012, he started 18 of UCLA's 19 matches and served as team captain, leading the Bruins to a 13-3-3 record and a second consecutive Pac-12 Championship. In 2011, Wiet led the Bruins to the College Cup semifinals while leading the UCLA defense to 12 shutouts on the season, the third-highest total in school history.

Williams was a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic honoree, including a first-team selection in 2013 after posting a 3.89 grade point average in Political Science. She averaged 3.8 points per game and was second on the team in total assists (76) and third in assists per game (2.2 apg) while averaging 1.8 rebounds per contest.

To be eligible for a Pac-12 postgraduate scholarship a student-athlete must have an overall grade-point average of 3.00 (based on a 4.00 scale) or its equivalent, be in his/her final season of intercollegiate athletics eligibility in all sports or be in his/her final year of undergraduate studies, have performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team, intend to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a full-time student in a graduate or professional program, and have behaved both on and off the field in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete, the institution and intercollegiate athletics.
