Incoming freshman Sydnee Michaels and sophomore Tiffany Joh were eliminated Thursday at the 106th U.S. Women's Amateur at the Witch Hollow Course at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Ore.

In her morning match, Michaels, 18, defeated Alison Walshe of Westford, Mass. 2-up with a birdie on the final hole. After falling behind a hole at No. 1, Michaels squared the match with a birdie at the third and never looked back. She built a 3-up lead through 14 holes, watched it fall to one when Walshe birdied the 16th, then won it on the final hole.

Michaels lost 2 and 1 in the afternoon to Jennie Lee, a Duke sophomore who defeated stroke play medalist Paige Mackenzie in the round of 32. Michaels never led in the match, but squared the score at the ninth after being down two. She was down two at the 13th, fought back to one down at the 16th before a bogey at the 17th cost her a date in the quarterfinals.

UCLA sophomore Tiffany Joh, the reigning U.S. Women's Amateur Publinks champion, saw her string of USGA match play victories end at six in a 1-up, 19-hole loss to Jennie Arseneault of Grinnell, IA.

Two down with five holes to play, Joh birdied the par-4 14th to cut the lead to one. Both players birdied the par-3 15th and each bogeyed the 16th and 17th holes. Joh's clutch birdie at the 18th squared the match, but a birdie at the 19th hole (#1) gave the match to Arseneault.
