LOS ANGELES - In a match much closer than the final score indicated, sixth-ranked UCLA fell to top-ranked and undefeated Stanford, 5-2 Friday in a Pac-10 women's tennis match at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the loss, the Bruins fall to 15-7 overall and 5-2 in Pac-10 play. The Cardinal improve to 22-0 (7-0 Pac-10) and will take on USC tomorrow for the conference championship.

Doubles action started the day with both teams vying for a 1-0 lead heading into singles play. Stanford was able to take a slight lead in the action when top-ranked Lauren Barnikow/Erin Burdette battled back from a 4-0 deficit to defeat UCLA's Daniela Bercek / Lauren Fisher, 8-5 at the No. 1 position. The Bruins, however, battled back to even it at one match apiece when Jackie Carleton and Feriel Esseghir defeated Stanford's Alice Barnes/Amber Liu, 8-3 at the No. 2 position. The point would be decided at court No. 3, where UCLA's Laura Gordon and Sarah Gregg posted an 8-4 victory over Emilia Anderson/Anne Yelsey.

Already up 1-0, UCLA would enjoy a 2-0 advantage in the match shortly after singles play began, as Gordon cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Anderson at the No. 6 position.

It was at this point that Stanford began to make its run, posting a trio of straight-set decisions. Next to finish was court No. 5, where Cardinal freshman Theresa Logar posted a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Fisher. At the No. 2 position, Barnes defeated Carleton, 6-4, 6-2, while over on court No. 3, Burdette knocked off Esseghir, 6-3, 7-6(4).

Although Stanford owned a 3-2 advantage, both remaining matches were extremely tight. Over at court No. 4, Gregg and Barnikow had split and were tied at 3-3 in the third set. Back on court No. 1, Bercek was up a break and serving to send her match into a third. It would become irrelevant however, as Barnikow clinched the dual by defeating Gregg, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3. In the day's final showdown, Liu defeated Bercek, 7-6(6), 4-6, 6-3.

UCLA returns to action tomorrow, hosting No. 10 Cal at the LATC beginning at Noon.
