Nov. 7, 2002

Farmers Branch, Texas - UCLA women's tennis player Sara Walker was a first-round winner Thursday in the opening day of competition at the Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at the Brookhaven Country Club in Farmers Branch, Texas.

Walker, the tournament's No. 6 seed, defeated Julia Scaringe of Florida, 6-2, 6-2. She will next face Oregon's Daria Panova in Friday's round of 16.

Walker is looking to become the first Bruin to capture the National Indoor title since Jane Chi accomplished the feat back in 1995. Chi defeated teammate Keri Phebus, 6-4, 6-4 in the finals.
